  1. I have recently bought an ADVC 100 with the intention of converting NTSC video tapes to cd. I have a machine that plays NTSC tapes, and an Athalon XP2000 with an 80 gig hard drive free for the captured files.
I'm using Windows movie maker for now, and as you probably guessed i'm from the UK.
    Here's my problem...

When viewing the American video in the preview screen the image is black & white. I thought this may only be on the preview, but i saved a few minutes and the finished file is in black & white as well.
I set the DIP switches on the device to the settings shown for NTSC input, and i know the device isn't faulty as i've tried to capture PAL input and everything is perfect, colour and all.

I'm guessing it's either the software or my video leads, but if anyone out there could help i'd be very grateful.

Also, can anyone recommend software that can edit the final capture file, increase brightness etc.

Thanx in advance for any help given.

    The Midnight.

    .
I don't think it's either software or video leads related. My guess is that you have a VCR "capable of NTSC Playback on PAL TV" as the ads often read. What these VCRs output to the TV -and to the ADVC- is not NTSC, but a format called PAL-60 or quasi-PAL. This format is neither fish nor fowl; is is video as 30 frames per second (as in NTSC) but with a PAL color signal. This format can not be captured with the ADVC, it needs a genuine PAL or NTSC signal.

I'm in the same situation as you (I'm from Sweden) and have lots of NTSC tapes I'd like to capture. The only way to do it is to buy a multistandard VCR (these are sold in shops on Tottenham Court in London, I've been told), so if you can go there...
It seems impossible to buy a genuine NTSC VCR from the USA.
I have contacted several on-line shops and none will sell a VCR to me, as the manufacturers have put export restrictions on sales of NTSC VCRs to Europe.

  3. Thanx for that.
I have a friend who works in a tv\video shop who said he will look for a true ntsc video.
    Much appreciated

If you find a shop in the U.K. that has a web site and and is willing to send a VCR to Sweden, please post a follow-up, as I am looking for a NTSC or multistandard VCR.

  5. Some Sony VCR's sold in the UK have 3 output options, PAL, PAL-60 and pure NTSC.

I don't know if this is the cheapest in the Sony range...

    Capture/edit software:

Sonic Foundry's VideoFactory is excellent. I beleive it can do basic colour/brightness correction too. It can also convert PAL to NTSC and NTSC to PAL. You can download a trial version from SoFo's site http://www.sonicfoundry.com/default.asp

  6. BTW, don't start to believe you made a mistake purchasing the ADVC-100. It's a problem for ALL capture devices, none can capture PAL-60.

  7. I have the same issue ( the picture is not B&W but a reddish tinge ). I found out that it is the Macrovision ( some copy protection to prevent copying ). To turn it off, press on the Select switch until you see the color bars ( about 15 secs ) and try again.

  8. Thanx once again for all the help.
I definately have no regrets in buying the advc 100. I've had nearly every make and model capture device available from all the top makes, pinnacle, dazzle, hauppage etc. I think the canopus is my 6th attempt with capturing!!
It's by far the best one i've had, and when i finally get a true compatible video player it'll be unbeatable for it's price range.
Thanx for the software info as well. I'll give sonic foundry a look.

That's great! I'll download it and test it.
    Thanks for your help!
