  1. i have been looking into buying the liteon 16x but i have noticed there are diffferent models numbers. i do alot of dvd ripping and i want to rip dvds faster, thats why i want to get another dvd rom. i was wondering are there any difference between them? are some of them capped at 2x like most rest of the dvd roms out there? thanks for the help.

IIRC it's the 163 that does rips faster. It's what I got in my previous PC from Dell and was able to rip at speeds at or above 8x. My new one has no DVD-ROM drive (just 2 burners) and I could use to have a faster reader so I'm interested in if the other models (like the 166) burn as fast as the 163. I can find both online for less than $100, but it's worth knowing which drives can do what.

  4. The Lite-On 163 is ATA33.
The Lite-On 165/166 is ATA66 and has SMART-X(adjusts read speed to demand).

What good is ATA/66-100 on the 165/166 when the 163 ripped at peak of 12x? Does the 165/166 rip faster than even that? May have to get one of those instead of a 163 if it works better with my system.

I have a 163 and can rip at up to 16x if the conditions are just right. Of course its averages no where near that. On the other hand my friends 166 is much smaller in size then my drive and rips on average about 1x slower... its nothing to worry about.

Much smaller drive? Is it not as deep as the 163? Otherwise what you're saying is get either the 163 or 165/166 and it should do pretty much the same thing. I'll start looking at prices. Seen a lot of OEM drives for really cheap, though the above link looks tasty

Yes his 166 is less deep then my 163, I'll have to ask him the exact model but the the shortest Optical drive I've seen in a desktop. very nice design actually IMHO.
