    I need some help!
My cd writer was down for 5 months and has just now been replaced. Since technology has grown, I have been scurrying around d/l ing all the new codecs that I need. The problem is that now that I want to rip a copy of MY OWN DVD's, I must have a codec I did not have before.

Real One, WMP, and WinDVD all lock up when trying to play any DVD. Which means I can't unlock the movies to copy! AUGH! I have UNinstalled Nimo Lite, K-Lite,Xvid, and AC3 Filter Codec Packs. Still, dvd's won't play. I even restarted the computer after uninstall. The error messages are as follows:
    ModName: ac3audio.ax
    hungapp

I just tried it again in WinDVD and it locks without playing the movie, nor does it even give me the error codes, just stuck screen of WINDVD!

If needed, I did write down all of my video and audio codecs listed in Hardware (before I unistalled the packs) if this would help to solve what is holding the programs up.

Thank you so much for your help,
    Tracey

O.K. I really need help! If you run by this post and I am in the wrong forum section, PLEASE let me or a moderator know so I can get help in the correct forum! PLEASE!

I just did a system restore to what I thought was before I installed the new codecs. Either I am wrong, or when doing a system restore, it does not restore hardware/codecs?? I am so frustrated and at a total loss!

I still can not play "The Ring", nor can I play "Signs". Does it have something to do with the audio in these specific movies being AC3? Are they even AC3? AC3 being the error message and all? Everything I thought I knew is gone and I have alot to learn. I tried to see if a VCD would play, and it played beautifully. Although, I have no idea what that means or if it has anything to do with anything at all.

Until I have a clue as to what to do, I am not going to muddy things up any further by d/l ing anything. I know I would just F things up even furhter.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    download this program http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/dxman.htm

find ac3audio.ax and remove it with this program ...

    uninstall windvd

    then re-install windvd

I read, and read, and read...on AC3 errors thru the ie, and found this:

was able to fix the problem. download GSpot from this site. It told me codecs i needed. I was able to download the code for AC3 from this site, which i found through a friend of mine:

    http://www.eclipsedvd.firstream.net/divxpack.htm

install the direct show pack. Afterwards, you will be able to see it with Winmedia 9 (both video and sound) However, DIVX 5 still does not recognize the AC3 because this codec is for DVD type audio.

    and kudos to this fix:
That pack from the above link really is a good piece of work. I had great trouble with ac3 drivers, causing several media players to shut down immedeatly after starting to play a movie with ac 3 sound. The pack fixed it!

So, did what they said! I now have all of the codecs I seemed to have before, have found the ac3audio.ax and deleted it, removed and reinstalled the windvd, upgraded to wmp 9, and done what you told me to do (BJ M). I still have problems in all media players.

Real One will not open the DVD. Win DVD will open, but is very choppy, and WMP 9 will not open and "not respondind"!!!!

WHat the hell is going on here???
I have spent hours reading onthis and it is driving me absolutely insane!!!!
Thank you for your advice though, BJ M!

windvd has the ac3 codec .. you only need one on your system (far as i know)

you may have more than one problem (real 1 and windows media play i never use except media player 6.4 as personally i think all other versions after that are crap - dont know anything about real player 1 either except what it is) .. i would think it is better to play dvd or whatever in windvd as it properly formats for correct aspect ratio and WMP doesnt seem to .

so the choppy part on playback is one problem and no audio w/ ac3 is other problem .. i think you are saying ..

my post above suggested to remove all ac3 codecs and basicly install/reg windvd to A. insure you have a proper playback mech. for dvd or avi files . B. insure you have a good ac3 codec registered and working on your system.

you have added back in a ripped ac3 codec again into your system ..
you prob DO need it if you are going to play an ac3 encoded file in WMP .

but you dont need to if you only use windvd to play ...

God, I can not even tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to brainstorm this problem with me. I am surprised that noone else has had an opinion as to what we might be dealing with! I have read over volumes of people with similar or same problems, and to no avail in solving my magical mystery tour from hell!
Again, thank you so very much.
And, I will look over things again and get back with the results. I know that it will be solved eventually. My hope is that my documenting this here on the forum, it is here for someone else to resolve there own problem without going thru the hell I have been in recently.

    BJM,

That is EXACTLY what I did! But, as I am d/l ing each program, I check to see if it works correctly. Exerything is working like a charm so far. But, now I have to d/l my codecs. And this is where I think my problems have lied! I do not want to d/l the Nimo codec, but want to individaully d/l each codec or pack that I only absolutely need. Have any suggestions? Remember, I was out of the game for 5 months, and not only forgot, but have not kept up with the new technology. (ie. AC3 and Xvid). There is more than one company that makes them and I don't want to make a mistake.
    Thanks,
    Tracey
