  1. Okay, it's Christmas as I'm sure you all know. And I got this nifty little Archos Media Player 20 Jukebox, it's capable of playing movie files on the color LCD screen. Which is one of the main reasons I bought the unit.

However I wasn't aware that I had to convert from .avi files to mpeg4 files so that they would read on the unit itself. It was especially annoying since the majority of my files are mpeg2.

I need a very easy to use, and very quick program that can convert from mpeg2 to either .avi, or directly into mpeg4 format *with sound*.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, I'm not too bright when it comes to video conversion.

And just for the record, I have been able to convert mpeg2 -> avi using NCTVideoConverter, but it's a really bad program.

So please guys, any recommended programs?

Sorry I'm of little help here, but didn't it come with software to do this? For the price of the machine, they could have at least thrown in some software.

Also might look for something called MovieJack (I think).
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  4. Actually it does come with software that converts the file to mpeg4 (if needed) and adjusts the resolution so that it fits on the screen, but you can only use this program to convert from .avi format.

fingernail, i'm trying out xmpeg right now, hopefully it works! Thanks alot for your help.

  5. Hello hastings....I was searching for the same info a while back, and ran across this link:

    Archos Conversions

I hope this info is useful for you... it may not be fast, but it will get the job done.

  6. So the archos uses 30fps ... compatible with nothing else .. nearly compatible with ntsc film... does it do 25fps for pal users??

The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

  7. RabidDog,

from the literature I have on the MMJB and on their website, the specs indicate the following:

"...The Jukebox Multimedia can play AVI audio/video files that comply with MPEG4 Simple Profile; the maximum display resolution supported is CIF, i.e. 352 x 288 pixels @ 30 frames/sec..."

So the max it can handle is 30fps. I've converted many types of programs, NTSC and PAL, and it played with no problems.

    Hope this helps,

  8. So it might be a bit more compatible than it looks .... so extra disk space , a lower price and a faster processor and I might get one!

  9. Pyle Ryder,

The link above doesn't work (it requires a user name and a password). Could you post an alternative link or some instructions about video compression for the archos?

    Thanks!

  10. Sorry I haven't checked this forum in a while....

it looks like the guy who was hosting this site made everything available only via log-in. My suggestion is to email him from the main webpage on that site and see if he can provide the info. I only have a hardcopy, not a html page-save..sorry.

If it's any help, I'm just using virtualdub to do the conversions now. The more you do it, the easier it gets... just be sure to make the resolution correct on the conversions for the archos limitations...
