Have you looked at JAW's MPEG Splitter? Give it a try, it should be able to do that.

IF that doesnt work for you try this: mpgtx
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15987

I had problems with JAW splitter and found this to be nice. You just type in how large you want your chunks to be and hit split. ITs even good for breaking large mpeg2 into smaller chuncks for SVCD, since JAW splitter only the first portion is accepted for SVCD image software, rest are not.

    Good luck

Tgpo... thanks for your response... I downloaded JAW MPEG2Splitter 1.6.1, and it helped... the problem is that it only edits elementary video streams, mv2, so I can cut the first 30 seconds of the video stream, but am left with original audio stream, mp2, which is too long, so on re-mux there is a sync problem... any suggestions?

galactica... again thanks for your suggestion... i took a look at mpgtxwrap and am having problems... I want to delete the first 30 seconds from a 1 hour mpeg2 file, so I open the file in mpgtxwrap, choose "split", and choose "split according to the following ranges"... I specify the range as "59:30-", which according to the mpgtx website means I should get the LAST 59min30sec of the file.. I choose "start" and immediately get "59:30- is not a valid mpeg file" in the mpgtx output window?! any suggestions?

    appreciate the help...

So basically you are just wantint to cut the first 30 seconds from the audio. The only way I can think of is to convert it to .aiff and edit it from there.

yes, that sounds good, but (sorry) how do you convert an mp2 file to AIFF?.. and of course, the next question is going to be what do i use to edit the AIFF file?

    thanks for your continued support..

There is an option under Missing MPEG Tools (I think this is it, I'm not in front of my computer), that'll convert mpeg2 audio to .wav I believe. You can then edit it in Quicktime Pro or any sound editor, there a some free ones on versiontracker.com. And if I am remembering correctly Missins MPEG Tools will canvert the .wav back to mpeg2 audio and has an option to mux it back for you.

    ugghhh!

I downloaded MiisingMpegTools, and I se under the mp2enc tab the options for converting AIFF or WAV to mpeg1 layer2, which I'll use once I edit the audio file, BUT I don't see anything that will change my mp2 to AIFF or WAV.. hmmm.

mpgtxwrap shoud work for you, I think you just have the syntax wrong. i don't have it here at work, but I think you need to type in {00:00:30} and this will split the file at 30 seconds.

    Final results...

To recap, i wanted to delete the first 30 seconds of a 1 hour mpeg2 file...

-- mpgtxwrap --> had a syntax error, once I figured it out it cut the file...BUT, though the now shortened file played perfectly on my mac, when trying to author it as SVCD (XA .img), immediately came up with a packet error... guesss it didn't like the cut.
-- JAW MPEG2Splitter --> only deals with elementary streams, so demuxed my file with ffmegX, then deleted the 30 seconds of the m2v stream... but now the mp2 stream was too long... arghh!.. so
-- MoreMissingTools --> converted mp2 to WAV, opened it (and m2v for proper sync) in Qucktime Pro, and cut the apropriate portion of the WAV file... then converted WAV back to mp2, used "mux as SVCD" in ffmpegx and voila!

thanks to all those that lent their support.. much appreciated,

    thom
