I have a problem with my method of backing up DVDs to disc, and as far as I know I've followed nearly everyones instructions. Nearly everytime I've done it, the disc gets to the (roughly) 2 hour mark and then stuffs up.

This is a run down of my method:

    1. Locate DVD requiring backup from DVD Library (in lounge room).
    2. Insert into iMac & use OSEx to rip the elementary streams. The result is two files (.m2v & .ac3).
    3. Drop both streams into Minx Transcoder, choose "Fit to DVD-R" and let Transcoder do it's job. The result is a new .m2v file.
    4. Import the new .m2v and the .ac3 file into DVD Studio Pro, name the disc, choose a startup action, add some 10 minute chapter markers, and "Build" the disc to a location.
    5. Locate the two "Build" folders (Audio & Video) and drop into the contents area of a DVD within Toast.
    6. Burn disc. Wait.
    7. Put resulting disc into DVD Player & press play.
    8. Skip ahead to check all chapter markers are working.
    9. Discover that the chapter marker (around the 2 hour mark) does not work.
    10. Eject disc from machine as fast as possible.
    11. Agressively throw disc against unsuspecting wall.
    12. Snap disc in half.
    13. Cry in bedroom for half an hour.
    14. Type a post on dvdrhelp.com.

And that's it. 99% of the time is the above, except that sometimes I like to swap 13 and 12 around. It gives me good closure.

  2. thats sounds about right.

have you tried playing the disks in a different standalone dvd player?

or maybe it is you burner, or blanks you are using?

is everything fine (sync wise) up untill the 2 hour mark?

and you backup other dvd that are under 4.4GB with no problem?

    sucks to be you

I'd be a slightly happier person if I knew that everything I'm doing is right and my equipment is broken.

I test the discs in three players. My iMac, my PC & my Sony DVD Player (with DVD-R Playback).

The blanks I purchase from the local Apple store. I buy the standard box of 5.

Sync wise it is perfect. We're on PAL (in Australia).

Backing up a DVD under 4.4GB is no problem.

And yes... it sucks to be me.
