Had been planning to get the Canopus ADVC 100 with my tax refund so I could start capturing with my laptop (with built-in firewire). However the laptop has XP with SP1, and I'm now concerned that I will have more trouble than it's worth in that combination.
Are there folks having success with that combination? If not, what else would folks on here recommend?

Getting closer to the date that I have to commit some actual dollars, and would still greatly appreciate an answer on this one.
Thanks,

First off, understand that it's IF you hit a problem with XP SP1. I've been using the ADVC-100 on an AMD 750 dedicated to Video authoring and haven't run into any issues (I did nothing special, no patches installed, nothing out of the ordinary). From what I can grasp over at the Canopus forums is that this is a problem that doesn't affect every user of the ADVC-100 w/ XP SP1, but Canopus has acknowledged that there is indeed an issue.
There have been work arounds posted as well as now an actual XP support utility. It looks also that Canopus is handling the issues on a case by case basis SINCE some people run into it, others don't.
I wouldn't recommend anything else. I purchased the ADVC-100 because of the results people have had with it here and the reviews that have been posted. I get no dropped frames and no audio-sync loss.... and I do export back out to analog at times to see what the finished result will be.
I would take a stab at it and if you run into problems contact Canopus. The forums as well over at the Canopus site are a wealth of information.
Good luck!

Thanks. I appreciate the vote of support, and feel much more comfortable putting some money down on that option

I have XP Pro w/SP1 and the ADVC-100 and have encountered zero problems.

I'm running XP Home Edition and have had NO problems with the ADVC-100. I've purchased few things that have really delivered what they say (you can read my review on the canopus comments) but this little gem is worth every penny. I plug this thing every chance I get because it goes above and beyond. All I need to see now is a piece of software that performs and delivers HALF as well as the ADVC-100

Agreed with other replies. The ADVC-100 works great. I also run XP Pro with SP1--no problems, albeit on a desktop. My only concern would be storage with your laptop. Capturing DV takes a lot of storage. Unless you have a large external firewire drive, you're going to be pretty limited in the amount of video you can capture--DV consumes roughly 13.5 GB per hr of video. Anyway, go for the hardware--it's great.
