reason i ask is ripping speed is painfull slow x2 and want it quicker!!

Its a liteon, make sure aspi is installed, then pull your hard drive controller from device manager and let it reinstall. Rip speeds SHOULD go up at that point. Good drive.

Yeah I have the same drive. JLMS is just "JVC Liteon-IT Manufacturing and Sales Limited"

If you go here JLMS you can download the latest firmware, which is "DS14"

I get between 6 and 16 speed when ripping DVD-Video depending on the DVD.

BarryHL, that site you posted a link for has the latest update being GHR6 for the 163D. That GHR14 is for the 166 drive which is NOT the same. GHR7 happens to be the latest update for this drive.

Only other reccomendation would be reinstalling your operating system. I don't know why these drives max out at 2x, but I, as well as several other posters a few months back had the SAME EXACT PROBLEM. We tried everything, but to no avail. Finally we all installed our OPERATING SYSTEMS AND WHOALA! Incredible ripping speeds from that point on. I would definitely try it because Windows seems to help cause this matter, but reinstalling the OS will help fix it. At least it did for myself as well as SEVERAl other posters.

As noted in another thread recently. If your using Windows (XP this works more then others, but you can still try) go into your device manager and uninstall the Primary hard drive host controller, then restart and it let it redetect. Sometimes even if DMA is enabled Windows (often the option in Windows just says DMA if able) Will kick into PIO mode, by removing them you force Windows to redetect and often your rip speeds will go back up. I got sick of reinstalling my OS every 6 months and this has worked very well for me.

@ Flaystus, what made you figure out that method with the host controller? Did you read it somewhere? I'm just curious. My damn rip speeds are cut in half since my upgrade to GHR7 from GHR3. I can read all media very fast now as I mentioned and my drive is region free, but I want my 10-12x DVD-9 and 15.4x DVD-5 rip speeds back.

Right now I can't get any more then 7x on DVD-5's and 6x on DVD-9's. DVD-9's actually start out faster then DVD5's, but they both take 20 minutes or so to rip. More then twice as long as before.


Any ideas as to why this upgrade won't go past 7x on any DVD, while my OLD GHR3 would make my 163D sound like it was going to fly right out of the damn bay while ripping? lol...ANY IDEAS? thanks

GOt it off a different forum, I had my speeds suddenly drop twice now and after doing some research it was explained to me.

Basicly Windows (XP in particular) only has the DMA if able option, which is good, but if windows incounters any errors doing so it remember, so one major error or some minor ones you may not even notice and XP will stop using DMA automaticly. Likely there is a reg key somewhere but its easier to rip the controllers.

I tested it myself just a few weeks ago, after reinstalling my OS and stuff for other reason I noticed my rip speed was cr@p again, so I tried it out. Worked like a wonder.
