I would suggest you first take a deep breath. Now hold it.

    Now let it out slowly.

    Relax.

    Good.

First off, if you're trying to make dvd copies, you won't need your external player - you should be able to rip the dvd to your hard drive, then reencode or process it (if necessary) and burn it to your dvd-r.

I think there are dvd burning apps that allow you to capture direct to a dvd-r, (I think NeoDVD from Mediostream has this ability) but I'm not sure I'd do it - If you get a hitch in the signal, you've just wasted money on a coaster. You also lose the ability to add menus or do any kind of "authoring" without re-ripping it to your hard drive.

If you have a hard drive that doesn't have 5Gb free on it, I would suggest you'd be better off getting a bigger hard drive before you invest in a capture card.

I suggest you check the section on Capture Cards and read the reviews, see what card is going to meet your needs. I have a Avermedia EZDVD card that's working pretty well for me, but there might be a better one for you.

hope this helps. Read the newbie and Authoring sections as well, they are full of great info and guides to do just about anything.
