I hate to tell you this but I also had my pioneer 106d in an external enclosure and everything was just horrible. I had errors while burning; with recordnow max, the error was at the beginning, similar to yours. I tried it with other software but it didn't fix the problem. It was until I took it out of the external and install it into my computer internally that things started work. I also formatted my hardrive just to make sure everything is clean, however, I think that wasn't really needed. Now, I am burning everything just fine, the dvr106d is one hell of a drive (after you get it to work), much better than my old optorite! Try putting it inside the computer instead? I think the problem causing all of this is your external enclosure. Good luck.

thanks for the reply i tryed what u told me and it works well. but the reason i had the external enclosure is to use it with my laptop. is their any other kind of external enclosure that i can use in order to make it work. and the external enclosure that i have i only payed $30 for it so it might not be that good.

I almost suspect that the enclosure is the problem.
Can't talk about the Pio-106 but I have a NEC1300A in a combined Firewire / USB2 enclosure. The brand for this is ADS Technologies. Everything works great! Drawback: It's not cheap.
Just a hint. Make sure that your Notebook has either USB2 ports or use a USB2 card for the connection. USB1 and USB 1.1 is far too slow for DVD burning even at 1x speed. CD burning is possible but limited to 4x speed.
