I currently have a ATI All-In-Wonder Pro, it works ok as a PVR but not the quality I want for converting existing VHS home movies and other tapes. I would only like to here from those that have both a better capture card than I and an ADVC-100. Your experiences and suggestions for my next purchase would be greatly appreciated.

I have an ati 7500 allinwonder and the advc-100. I use the canapus with my firewire card on my desktop and laptop and use vegas video 4 to capture in dv format and ulead video studio to capture in mpeg. I don't use the ati with the advc because I prefer the quality of firewire capture. The files are larger so I got an firewire external hard drive (80 gig). I barely ever use the ati anymore except to capture from cable on the auto scheduler (simpsons). I recommend using the advc-100 with a firewire card and vegas video for capturing in dv and using tmpgenc to convert to mpeg.

I think you will find that the ADVC-100 is the ultimate solution for capturing anything. All you need is a firewire port and software to capture with. I've never seen anything that works better!

Alenhard, you're right, I think nothing is better than Canopus. I've read much or comparision test with Canopus and Pinnacle, Canopus won. I think anopus os my good choice.

I had a fair few capture cards in the last couple of years from ATI 128 AIW, to the Asus deluxe cards to the newer Winfast 2000xp tuner/capture card. Quite simply the Canopus advc 100 has given the best result of all the fore-mentioned. DV's 13Gb per hour avi size is smaller than huffyuv's file size, also the Canopus can by-pass macrovision protection from vhs & dvd sources. I did a back to back test capturing vcd mpeg1 using the Canopus & the Winfast, compared to the Canopus the Winfast result was macroblock Central.

If you have enough cpu power ( I have 2.8 ghz) you can capture to DV without firewire. I use iuvcr with my bt878 card to capture from the tuner on board and the S-Video in to 720 by 480 yuv2 format recompressed to dv and 48khz audio. I have used the ms dv codec, the Canopus software codec, the MainConcept and the panasonic with all, at least to my eye looking pretty much the same. Occasionally for no apparent reason the iuvcr software will flake out and lose the video tab. There is a registry patch I then load which refreshes everything and I'm good again. Bottomline is, I agree that for std def TV is the best all around capturing codec.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. The ADVC-100 is the way I'll go. Have also been looking at Vegas Video and ULead MediaStudio Pro. Now I have another decision to make. BTW, In the future I'll need to remember to check the "Notify me when a reply is posted box".
