I have a Pioneer 105 and am trying to use Memorex DVD-R's and the blank RW that came with the drive. If I make a video DVD it can be read in my KLH DVD player, but not my Sony DVP-NC600. If I try to make a data DVD, not for video, just archiving files to make space on HD, I make nothing but coasters. I have tried Roxio 5, 6, a few different versions of NERO including the latest, and Stomp for the data disks. The best results were with stomp and about half of what I burned to the disk was usable. What am I doing wrong?

Probably nothing BUT your Sony player may not like what you produce. My friend has a DVP-360 that only accepts certain DVD-RWs. Nothing else will work in it. You'll have to check the player list and see what others have got your player to handle.

The Sony thing is less of a concern to me at the moment, I have a thread in the player forum for that. I am mainly concerned with trying to burn a plain old data dvd for backing up files. It just does not work.

There are some thing's I would try Format the C drive you might have a bad window's set the Pioneer Ao4 to master. I would change it to mast first I have the AO4 I can set to Slave or maste no problem but give it a show. Now for the sony I think it's just that player. Also try A dfrag your drive and run a scan disc if you have FAT 32 change it to NTFS if you have windows 2000 or XP only

Running NTFS under XP pro, just reformatted about a month ago. The 105 is set as master on my secondary IDE channel.

I use the Roxio Plat 5 to do data back up. I have the Cend 105 (Pioneer equal). There is a software update on Roxio I suggest you install.
One thing I found was if you try to load over 4gig of data it pukes. This could be an issue for you. Back it down to below 4 gig (if you are over).
Roxio data B/U does not work with RW (I think) make sure you are only using -R disks. -
Your Sony should playall formats of DVD as seen here.

Sony DVP-NC655P is what I have and also a Panasonic which is really fussy.
Both will play a DVD-R Disc. The sony plays anything I stick in it; now to the problem.
This is going to be up to you but I have burned over 250 DVD's and have made alot of discoveries along the way.
First get rid of Roxio and anything that is Roxio out of your system even if it requires a complete format and reinstall of windows. This is the most crucial.
Defrag and make sure your page file is 1.5 that of your ram. If you are running windows xp you need at least 128 of ram just for the OS.
Install Nero.
Set your burn drive to PIO Only in the hardware manager.
Don't multitask and shut down all nonessential programs!!
Shut down your antivirus software and any firewalls that are running.
If you still have problems after this then your discs aren't any good. -
As an after thought that is also important to burning discs;
Disable WinXp's ability to write to Disc. I went and looked at your profile, should have done that first
Also avoid having multiple burn programs in the OS especially drag and drop programs like dla or incd. They will conflict with one another and prevent a correct burn.
I really would strongly urge you to format your primary active partition and start over with a clean install of windows and choose only one burn program.
I have tested just about every burn program and have found the latest Nero to be the best.
Good Luck!

Yes, you want to use "PIO Only"
I have an older AO3 which in the manual specifically states that if you have problems burning to the drive or have sector errors to change the IO setting from DMA to PIO Only. Once I did this "and that was 225 or so disks ago" I have never had a failure.
PIO Only works direct through the CPU where as DMA works through the memory.

I uninstalled all burning software but Nero, and shut dow all extra programs. This allowed me to successfully burn data dvd's. However I am still unable to burn a successful video dvd. I looked for PIO mode and I cannot find it. I know where you are talking about, but I remember it from Win98, I am not finding the same options under XP.

Open explorer and right click on "My Computor" and select "Manage".
A window will pop up; now navigate to "Device Manager" and select it in the left pane. Once selected, in the right pane will be a listing of all the hardware on your computor.
Navigate to "ide ata/atapi controllers" click it and select the correct "ide" channel your burner is on; "Primary, Secondary"
Right click and select "properties" and a new window will pop up.
Select "Advanced Settings" and there you will see where to change your burn drive to PIO Only.
You can use the Nero Info tool to aid you in selecting the correct "ide channel" and "Position, O or 1" to make the changes for your burner.
Restart, or log off the computor. Windows won't ask but you should.
