  1. Hi,

I am using smartripper then DVD2AVI and then TMPGEnc to rip and encode DVDs. I am following the instructions in the newbie guide on this site and am having trouble playing VCDs in my home dvd player (AD-500A) the vcd plays but looks like crap. I don't know where to begin to find the problem. I have tried various configs in TMPGEnc. Also, I have an AMD Athalon 900 and 256 meg of ram.

    Thanks for any help!!

  2. Try this
I finally found the best possible way to make a VCD from DVD.
After 2 years of making them I discovered that a combination of the right settings using DVD2AVI and TMPEGenc.

    Use the following.
I use cladDVD 1.70 to rip the movie files only from the DVD.
Then I open DVD2AVI and use the following settings
Video: iDCT Algorithm - IEEE-1180 reference
    Field Operation - Forced Film
    Color Space - YUV
YUV > RGB - TV Scale

    Audio: Track Number - 1
    Channel Format - Dolby Digital
    Dolby Digital - Decode

    Then save project.

Open up project .dv file with TMPEGenc.
    Video Setting
    Stream Type- MPG1
    Size 352 x 240
    Aspect Ratio - 4.3 525 line NTSC
    Frame Rate 29.97
    Rate control mode - Automatic
Motion Search Procision - Highest Quality

    ADVANCED tab
    Video Source Type - Non-Interlace
Field order - Bottom field first
Source Aspect Ratio - 16:9 for wide screen / 4:3 for full screen
Video Arrange method - No Margin (Keep Aspect)

    QUARTIERIZE MATRIX tab
    Put checks in the
    Output YUV data
    Use floating point DCT

    No hit the ENCODE Button

I use a VBR at 29.97 NTSC 16:9 Aspect and it comes out
    perfect.
