No, its not possible for a DVD player to read an AVI. DVD's use MPEG-2 compression, but most can also read MPEG-1 (VCD) so just encode the AVI file into an MPEG-1 or 2 compliant file, burn it and watch your movie that way, as long as your DVD player is compatable.
