Two weeks ago, I ordered a Sony DRU-500AX from http://www.hypermicro.com. What they sent (after I paid 20.00 for over-night shipping) was a Sony DW-U10A (the model # printed on the drive). I called their sales staff and they told me this was the same thing as a DRU-500AX. After some research, I went ahead and flashed it to make it a DRU-500A, and that seemed to work fine.
My question is, is this in any way the DRU-500AX drive I originally ordered? Is the "AX" version different than the "A" version of the DRU-500?
I will attempt to return it if it's not a real DRU-500AX.
Thanks for your help.

Hypermicro is usually ok. I ordered an HP 100i from them when it first came out and got what I ordered except the faceplate was dark grey, big deal.
I also have the Sony DRU-500A. The 500UX is the external version and the 500AX is the internal model that supposedly burns at 4X out of the box on -R media. Did a google search and found "Sony DW-U10A replacement of DRU500A DVD Burner, DVD+R/RW/-R/RW/CD-R/RW Drive (Recorder)"
If it works and you're happy leave well enough alone as the unit they send to replace this maybe a refurb or take longer in shipping or cost more to return for being non-defective, etc. etc.
Burn on, dude! -
the one you got is OEM that mean you do not get Sony tech support I have the retail box I call some for tech support there stupit at sony some old lady that only know how to work a type writer. But they should have given you the retail box if that what it said on there website site. try Memorex and Kpermedia if you can not burn these DVD-R hook up your burn to master if it can not burn these two brand's send it back. if it can burn these two brand keep it

Thanks for all your help, but I should have phrased my question this way:
If I ordered the DRU-500AX and the shipping manifest says "DRU-500AX," but they actually sent me the DW-U10A (model number on drive), did I get ripped-off? Is the DRU-500AX a better drive in any way? If so, I want to send it back soon to make sure I get my money back.
I have a general feeling of being ill-used by this company, but I want to be sure before I get all medieval over the phone...
Thanks -
If I ordered one thing and received something completely different (aka model number) I would send it back and request the original product that I paid for. Sounds like the old bait and switch.
A customer deserves what they paid for and you didn't receive what you paid for.
If they won't comply mention the Better Business Bureau to them and see what they'll do. -
The question I have is how much did you spend for the drive? If you paid anywhere close to the 'retail' price for the DRU-500AX and got the OEM drive, then I would return it ASAP. Since you didn't get any of the software and have no support structure, you would be getting ripped off. But, if you paid a much lower price than the 'retail' price (like $200 or so), then I wouldn't worry too much about it and keep the drive, as long as it works.
Just my 2 cents worth!
