  1. Well, I decided to frameserve with Virtual Dub directly to Mainconcept MPEG encoder. The result is that I get ultra high quality encoding at 30% of the time it took for TMPGenc.

Used the filter under Virtual dub to change aspect ratio. Other than that, I get fast encoding.

Well, how do I tell the average bitrate for VBR.....I used TMPGenc to calc the average CBR....use that for my average bitrate......easier than a calculator.

The quality seems much better and sharper. Of course, miss them settings in TMPGenc for contract, gamma, color correction....but I can do that in frameserver.

The Mainconcept MPEG-encoder has a free demo (9.6Mb file) and costs $149. I am downloading the demo to have a go at it. More details can be found at www.mainconcept.com
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Yes Mainconcept dpes MPEG-1 and 2. Alao you can encode an MPG file. not only avi.

    wipeout,
I'm getting my problems taken care of 1 by 1 on Mainconcept. I am totally ignorant about frameserving. I have both avisynth and Vdub. I assume that you used vdub first, so that you can get the aspect ratio accurate to the source if it is a wide screen movie ? Could you give me some basic details on this.

you can load VOBs into MC (including the ac3 file)

you can load just about anything into it .

it has batch encoding and encode to one file (any source)

it has very good pulldown features

    excellent multiplex

lots of settings to twiddle or just use the templates ..

    can not do re-sizing

hyperthreaded for blazing speed on dual xeons 2.4 and up and on 3ghz p4's - but very fast even on single cpu

    BJ_M,

I particularly love the batch processor, so easy, so clean.

The re-sizing is an issue for those movies in wide screen. Could you help me out with out to use VDUB, Asyinth to get the aspect ratio correct on those ?

  7. Can anyone make a step by step guide on how to convert AVIīs with Mainconcept?? I have looked at it, and think it is very confusing.

Why do you have to frameserv?
If it aint broke, donīt fix it.

The framserve for me is for those movies that are in wide screen format, with the black bars. The is not a "keep aspect ration" setting, so all of those get encoded as 4:3. This leaves me with SVCDs that are "stretched" out when I watch them.

Can some one advise how to run the batch process and only make one mpeg.

Could you merge the vobs, run dvd2avi to get the audio and then encode if you do not want to run a batch job ?

    Thanks.

  10. I've succesfuly managed to frameserve from VirtualDub to MainConcept, it's
even in the updated guide: http://www.labdv.com/sefy-guide/index.html

    Use the Smart Ripper -> DVD2AVI -> VFAPI -> VirtualDub -> MainConcept

And since you can use VirtualDub, you can add subs and filters and whatever
