  1. Hi Guys,

I figured out that someone already might do what I would like to do if it is possible, so I go for the easy way, I’ll just ask

This is what I want to do, record TV shows or movies from my satellite receiver onto my laptop, then transfer the recording to my desktop and burn VCD.

    Satellite Receiver>>>>>Video Capture Card>>>>>>Laptop Celeron 300 3.5GB 32RAM

    Laptop Celeron 300 3.5GB 32RAM>>>>>Desktop Celeron 400 8GB 64RAM/Burner

    Desktop Celeron 400 8GB 64RAM/Burner>>>>>VCD

Question 1: I need a Video capture card, which one is the cheapest and the best for this job?
Question 2: Which software will I need to record from the satellite receiver in real time? And more importantly is it possible?
Question 3: Does my Laptop Celeron 300 3.5GB 32RAM configuration will be up to the job?
Question 4: Once it’s captured what should I do convert it to what, I need it in a VCD format, what software will I need
Question 5: To burn the VCD I have Easy CD Creator 4, is it ok?

Bad case scenario, the satellite receiver is connected to a VCR so I can record the movie on VHS Tape first, and when it is over, I just playback the tape and capture it, but still is 3.5GB on the laptop are enough?

Worse case scenario, I tape using the VCR, and then I hook the VCR using the Capture card to the Desktop, and playback the tape.

You are the experts; I’ll appreciate your help.
    Thanks in advance.

Why to do all this staff?
    There is easier way:
Buy a Hauppauge Win DVB/s card. cost the same as a good capture card, and saves to you hd the sat transmission as it is, in realltime.
Ofcourse, the best solution is a nokia 9200-9500-9600-dbox 1 satellite receiver, with DVB2000 firware (unofficial). Now, you have timer also... You can program the receiver for a year to grabb from various channels at all the times and store mpeg-2 files to youf HD
One hour of satellite rip: 1.8 giga

You can demux and remux those files as SVCD, and you have perfect XSVCD for your player, if it is supports high bitrates.
No problem with my Cyberhome M212! Perfect, 30min XSVCDs,as they transmitted.

Or you can re-encode them to VCD, SVCD, CVD, DiVX, etc. See the mpeg2 to svcd or vcd guides!

  3. SatStorm(or anybody else) can you recend a good website or place of info on what the DVB s card can do, I live in the uk and have no idea how to use it(Well I know you plug it in to a dish), where to get a common interface module, etc

Plus after speaking to Tech support on the card they tell that the card can NOT recieve Sky Digital

    Thanks

For receive scramble signal you need
    a receiver
a cam with the encoding system
    a subscription card

The europeans encoding systems are: Irdeto, Betacrypt, Seca/mediaguard, Viacces, Conax, Cryptoworks and Nagravision. There is also some prof ones, like power vu and raz

Sky digital, uses an american based encoding system called Videoguard. For this system there is no cam in the market. So, you have to buy digibox, satellite receivers with embedded videoguard cams. For all other systems, you don't need that: Just the subscription card and the right cam...

So for sky digital, you can do only analogue capturing, and not for all channels, 'cause many of thems have macrovision!!!!

For ITV Digital (on digital), you can buy a aston seca cam and a card and use the receivers I wrote before.

Anyway, just for your information (you can't use it in UK for Sky Digital), here is a link: http://www.odsoft.de
    Read about WinDVB Live!

Another solution might be the new Sky+ receivers, with empbedded hard disks. Maybe soon there will be a way to rip from those HD the captured mpegs and send them to a pc for proccessing. But I don't know yet someone to do it...
    Good luck

  5. Thanks SatStorm,
Could you give me the exact reference of that card please, I can see plenty of Hauppauge cards, but not the Win DVB/s card.
The reason why I wanted to do all that is because, the main computer is in a room and the receiver in another room, I am also interested to capture VHS-C from camcorder, and put few old videos on VCD.
What do you think about a card called the dazzle or something, I wanted something external too.
    Again I appreciate your help.
