Asda: Pacific 1002.
The numbers of these units are still pretty scarce. According to Asda units are stuck at customs. However I got one over the weekend and it posed no problem. It has played VCD/SVCD out of the box. I will test the other formats.
The only reason I am recommending this unit is because of the 3 year warranty that Asda give you for free and it’s a cheap price.

I thought Asda had got rid of the 3 year warranty on electrical goods. Have they reintroduced it ?

Asda warranty:
Both the helpline (national) and the store told there is a 3 year warranty with dvd players. There is a leaflet in store. You register the product with them when you get it. (Free phone call)
Hope thats a help -
Hi just to make things clear ASDA will refund / replace any dvd/vcd player with or without a receipt ....this is there customer policy you do not even have to register the product for the warrenty 3 year thing...

I have one of the early Pacific 750s before they disabled VCD capability. However, although it will play SVCD it will not do so acceptably. So, to add to the earlier advice - check you can return it if unsatisfactory and check early on to make sure it will play all the types of disc you expect it to. 8)

And asda will change it in 3 years no questions asked. I know this as I took a samsung player back last month and changed it (for a pacific) after about 18 month's they even gave me the cash difference back.

I've had my pacific dvd750 for a while but have just ordered a Phillips 634 as it will play xsvcd etc.
The pacific plays VCD and SVCD(must be SVCD standard). Had problems with playing back DVDs (the odd skip), so taking back for a refund. -
I don't think you can go far wrong with Philips. After all, they appear to hold the licensing rights for VCD and SVCD players. So paying to incorporate this facility should not be a problem for them. 8)
