  1. I'm hoping to capture at 720x576 for dvd-r whats the rough size for various formats, say per 10mins? I have a 40gb hard drive is this big enough? Based on some stuff I read somewhere, that will only hold just over an hour (1.5hrs max) at decent quality is that right?

If this is right would this be capturing using AVI or mpeg, or are they both the same. That doesnt leave any workspace if I get even a couple of short programs on.

Maybe time to invest in a new drive!

I was hoping to do svcd or similar reasonably good quality but my new f*****g RV41 will only play DVD-r & VCD - (dont want to do vcd) so I guess I'm stuck with dvd format.

    Thanks for any info.

The size depends on the codec you want to use.
And avi and mpeg are not the same.Avi is a sort of container type, which can contain a lot of different video types.
So, first of all you should decide, what HW do you have/want for capturing and then decide which format is the best for you.
For example, DV (an avi type) call s for roughly 13GB per hour.

  3. I have an ATI vivo ( i guess thats bad after reading some posts & replies on here!) am I doomed??

Basically I would 'like' decent quality onto a dvd-r, hopefully at least comparable to vhs -better if possible.

I am familiar with ripping & re-encoding, but that seems so much less hardware/program-hungry than capturing.

After all, capturing is the easiest part of the whole process.First you have to decide, how to capture (which program, for example AVI-IO, as you want to have audio and video in-sync).Then into what format (i.e. which codec) you want to capture. This depends on CPU power and speed of HDD.If you go for Huffyuv, then you can expect good results, but be prepared for huge file sizes. After that you must edit and compress. The remainder you should know.

    720 x 576
    huffyuv: 900mb-ish per minute
PicVideo mjpeg quality 20: 800mb-ish per minute
PicVideo mjpeg quality 19: 300mb-ish per minute
Suggest a seperate hd drive for capture, formatted after each capture/encode, if you haven't already got one.

The idiots that say that either have never tested or have had bad experience with an 8mb Rage five years ago which they didn't configure right and won't buy ATI again.
I have an ATI ViVo 64mb DDR Radeon I picked up brand new for £35 on ebay and it's the best bargain peice of hardware I ever bought.
People seem to assume they should spend 80% of their budget on the capture card, absolute crap.
I invested in a second hard drive for video capture only, for4matted after each encode and now capture with huffyuv at 720 x 576 using Virtualdub, encode with TMPGEnc Plus and output to dvd-r with no noticable loss of quality.
However, I prefer PicVideo mjpeg at quality 19 as it produces a third of the file size with comparable quality.
    You have a great card.
What chipset do you have, if it's VIA = bad luck.
    If t's VIA KT133a = shit luck.
    For me......
....ATI Radeon (£35.00), new K7S5A motherboard (£42.00) with SiS chipset (SiS, superb) and a coupl of Maxtor hdd's (£150.00) -best thing I ever did.

My suggestions are lossless capture by the way, not DV, hence large file sizes but they do produce the best results.

  8. Many thanks for the reply(s) Thats the exact one I have 64m DDR- I had the same sort of scaremongering when I bought my dvd writer- touch wood so far after a little experimentation I use Verbatim dvd-r's and have no probs (my rv41 doesnt like any other brand so I stick to them)

I have AMD chipset & processor although I have been looking at upgrading for a while, maybe now is the time...

The Elite K7S5A motherboard (tekheads.co.uk and ebuyer.com) I bought has been superb for me.
It'll take anything from your Duron up to the latest Athlon (2700 I think) and has dual memory modules so if you have SDRam like I have you can use that and then upgrade to DDR when you have the cash.
    Do it gradually.....
....motherboard, hard drive then see how you feel - do some tests etc.
If you're still not happy get the processor.
I wish I'd tested seperately to see which was the biggest benefit - I installed motherbaord processor and hdd's all at once (as well as dvd-r/ram, case and cdrw!)
