  1. I have an avi movie with ac3 sound. When I try to extract that audio into a seperate file using VirtualDub it won't have it. It displays an error message. I'm not sure why this is, but basically I need to know how to convert that ac3 audio to a WAV file. It seems to be the only way that I can convert the avi movie into an mpeg.

I've tried everything and looked everywhere. Please, please help me out here. I'm at the end of my wits!

What is the error message? You can convert the AC3 file to Wav with Headac3he only after you have extracted it with Vdub. Alternatively, Goldwave will extract and convert straight from the AVI. You need the AC3 codec installed. Do you have it? You can check using Gspot. All these prog's should be available in the Tools section.

You could use FlaskMPEG with the VOB files and select "Save Audio as WAV", having selected to decode audio first. This is perhaps the most straightforward and fast way.

What I do is to extract the audio stream from the DVD using SmartRipper and selecting to do stream processing, chose only the audio track you want, select "Demux to separate file" and you will get an AC3 file. (I subsequently use the AC3 track as is).
To convert the AC3 file into WAV, I would use Re-MPEG and go to tools to select the AC3 file to convert into WAV.

    Hope this helps
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
