I am trying to re-encode family guy for DVD and I was wondering what are the best settings, in terms of quality, for encoding animation. I have fiddled around myself, but the quality always seems to be very poor.
As animation is very simple compared with live action I thought the quality would be very good, even at loow bitrates
I am using CCE SP, but also have MainConcept and TMPGEnc so if any of these are better, let me know
Cheers![]()

Just curious-
What is the format you are re-encoding it from? Divx, MPG, etc. And which format type is it- NTSC, PAL, or NTSC Film? This has made a difference for me in the past. If the format types is different- example trying to convert NTSC to PAL or vice-versa, it may make a difference. I have found animation from Divx files that were PAL, and I use NTSC. When I did a straight conversion using TMPGEnc, they were always problematic. When I changed to NTSC Film setting, the conversion and picture were much better as the framerate was closer, and they played great in my DVD player.
I think your situation is in reverse though- Cheers is usually a British saying, so my assumption would be that you are converting a NTSC format (as it is a US series) over to a PAL format, which will have some loss of quality because of the number of lines in the rendering. I am not sure how to correct this problem except when using TMPGEnc making sure the advanced setting tab under "Other Settings" is set to "Keep Aspect Ratio".
I hope this helps in some way. -

I am encoding from PAL to PAL and the source is a DVD rip.
I have noticed that there is a preset for animation in CCE so I am going to try it out now.
