  1. Don't you just hate that tag, newbie, like some kind of sub-human animal.

My interest right now is to transfer my old VHS and 8MM home videos to VCD (DVD later when I can afford a DVD burner and/or the DVD format wars are over).

Anyway, I posted an inquiry some time ago about a collective source for information on this whole process. This is a great forum, but, I, probably like many of you, would like some kind of book, notes, whatever, to introduce me to this subject. I'm don't have alot of time to peruse sites and am not apparently very adept at searching out stuff in forums.

I found one on Amazon.com, looked through it last night, and it seems like it is a good start.

    Title: From VHS to DVD
    ISBN: 1585070548

If any of you have run across other sources you have found helpful, I'd appreciate the tip. Thank you.

sounds like a histroy of title not an actual giude book.

and dont forget Guide books are only acurate for about the time it takes to publish it.

    Vhs - vcd - dvd

are you converting home movies or real block buster's?

Yes it dose make a differnce.

home movies make great Vcd's not much action in them so the dont get very blocky.

  3. No, it's not a history book. It explains the use of VirtualDub, TMPEGEnc, and some other software that I've seen mentioned and apparently in wide use among forum members here. It comes with a CD that has versions of that software on it along with some other software I'm not familiar with, AIST MovieXone, FlasKMPEG, and DVTool. But, probably not the latest versions/upgrades.

Yes, I'm sure it's not the latest and greatest, but, I need to walk before I can run. It's like when I read some of the posts here, the discussion is over my head. Terms and such that I don't understand or relate to. All I was attempting to do was inform some other newbies that come here that there may be one source to bring us up to speed. And, inquiring if anyone had run across other sources.

Yes, I'm trying to convert VHS and 8MM home movies to digital format. Starting with VCD and eventually DVD. I rent my blockbusters.
