    P4 2.4GHz
    1GB DDR RAM
    120 GB 7200 (master)
    80 GB 7200 (slave)

capping from ANY source (my MINI-DV camcorder, my DIGITAL8 camcorder, my DIGITAL8 VCR) through firewire to my NON-OS DRIVE I lose frames here and there (sometimes every 30-50, sometimes 1 per thousand)

my lesser system doesn't EVER drop frames (AMD 2100+ w/ 768 MB DDR RAM) even when capping to the OS drive.

other than the better hardware, the system and my method are identical. what is up?

to isolate the problem I tried:
**DVIO and Premiere to cap (both have same problem)

**my PCI firewire card and my onboard firewire port (both have same problem)

**two different firewire cables (both have same problem) (plus they are the same ones I use on the other system which works fine)

Windows 2000 Pro on both systems, all updates, etc. Also, the capping, editing, encoding and burning software is all I have on either box. Nothing runs in the bg either.

sorry if it sounds impossible to solve, but any input is helpful at this point.

  2. Kind of strange, but try this:
    1) while capturing and having dropped frames, invoke the task manager by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and select Task Manager
    2) select the Applications TAB and note all applications that are running
    check for any unusual apps
    3) select the Processes TAB and note the one that are most time consuming (besides the Idle Process)
    4) select the Performance TAB and look at the CPU usage, the graph should be fairly low.
You may notice somethings that are unusual causing your system not to perform well.
