Ok,

Not that this topic hasn't been discussed before

Specs:

P4 1700MHz
512 MB Ram
Snazzi III AV.DV capture card
2 80 GB 7200RPM drives
Sony DRU500A DVD burner (1.0d)

-------

I've come to the conclusion that it is a waste of time to try and edit mpeg2.

Seriously,
I capture mpeg2 (via hardware) using the Snazzi card from my old Hi-8 camcorder. The capture looks nice. Pretty impressed with the quality.

Now the fun starts!

Load up DVD Workshop 1.2

0) Load the mpeg file (it's roughly 4GB)
1) Set edit points to trim the beginning and end of the file
2) Go to "finish" and make a disk
3) I set the specs of the output to match the input file
4) Tell it to not to render compliant mpeg files
5) Create the disk

....drum roll ....
DVD workshop start re-rendering the mpeg file (takes about 6-7 hours)

Ok, now I know that I set the settings correctly, because if I don't put any edit points in then DVD workshop won't re-render (takes about 20 minutes to produce the video_ts folder)

I should note that the final DVD has no problem. Looks ok and sounds ok.
It's just annoying that something that should take 20 minutes takes 6 hours.

------
The same is true for Video Studio 6.0.

0) Load the mpeg file (it's roughly 4GB)
I create a project from the files settings

1) Set edit points to trim the beginning and end of the file
2) Go to "finish" and make a video file
3) I tell it to create the video file with the same settings as the input file
4) Wait 6 hours for it to re-render

NOTE:
I have no problem joining files with the same settings. This works fine in both apps.

Now, some of the savy may say, Use TMPEG and use the "merge and cut" tool.
I did. It doesn't rerender takes about 20 minutes but the audio and video is really out of sync.

Soooo,

In conclusion, from now on, I will use the pass-thru feature from my miniDV camcorder to capture DV AVI. All is well when I do this.
I will then take out the snazzi card, urinate on it and through it out the window.

Unless, of course, someone can help?
