Got this MPEG1 (not of my own manufacture) that seems OK. It's about 75 min long. I can play it on my computer, I can load it in VirtualDub. I can load it VCDEasy for authoring - mpeg scan doesn't complain. However, when I build the VCD image, it's just 8 minutes long! Trying to remux in TMPGEnc also gives me a new MPEG about 8 minutes. Somewhere there's something seriously wrong with this file, but what?

If it was an AVI, you would automatically scan it for junk frames. Because its a mpeg you may think its not got any, when it has.
Sometimes you can repair little problems by using TMPGEnc > Tools >Merge&Cut and saving out another copy.
See if the scan in vdub will fix it, but you then would need to save as AVI -
Nope, it was mpeg to begin with (well, at least when it landed on my HDD)
Tried MPEG corrector. Result: VCDEasy wont even recognize it as a MPEG.
Tried the merge/cut trick by selecting 0 to last. Got me 512 secs - stops at the same point as VCDEasy does. Mighty strange!
I'm giving up on this one, me thinks...
