I can't get AVI's to play on any of the programs I want to use. The results I get vary from 'simple' refusal to play - to Blue Screen crashes. The details:
a)Adobe Premiere 5.1:
a1)I get the BSOD and '0D' exceptions when I try to play the AVI from the timeline. Details as follows:
a2)I am on Win98SE and recorded the AVI using Premiere linked to a DV camcorder via firewire on my Pinnacle DV500.
No editing done to this file. I get the same problem from other AVIs captured from analogue video input to the DV500.
b)Windows Media Player 9
b1)I downloaded WMP9 hoping that would help. But...
b2)When I open an AVI from within WMP9 or even run it from Explorer (WMP9 is default for AVIs) - the player reports that the file is 'playing' but the screen stays blank - and the audio is silent.
c)DivX 5.0.3
c1)DivX says it cant open the file
d)Other players
d1)The GOOD (?) news: The AVI plays okay on Movie Player (v3.0) and mplayer.exe (but not smoothly).
d2)BUT: the BSODs happen when I play the AVI using Windows Media Player (version 6.4) (which I had used before downloading WMP9.
Properties of one of the AVIs that won't play:
FILE NAME = DVExpert.avi (size 99.0mb)// AUDIO FORMAT = PCM,32,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo // VIDEO FORMAT = 720 x 576, 24 Bits, 696 Frames, 25.000 Frames/Sec, 3641 KB/Sec, dvsd ..
I ran the Gspot utility on this file and it gave the following results:
File
File/Path: H:\DVExpert.avi

Stream Type and A/V Interleave

So can anyone help me with this... it's very frustrating ... So,
What have I missed or done wrong? I've installed the latest DivX and Nimo Codecs without success.
Thanks for your help.

I had a similar problem (no errors though) with playing my previously recorded movie in Premiere. It would only show a splitsecond of my clip and then stop the playback. Found out that it was when I had my DV camera turned on. After turning the camere off I had no problems, only DV out on my camera. There is also a setting in Premiere that prevents sending it to the camere.
hope this helps. -
It looks like you are capturing type 1 DV. Few programs can handle type 1 but do work with type 2 DV. Just because it has an AVI extension doesn't mean it works in any app that handles AVI.
Many programs will work with type 2 DV AVI. There is a free converter for type 1 to type 2 at

Thanks
t_g_i_f ... I'm having the problem even when my DV Cam is not attached to the DV500/Premiere.
Kitty .... I installed the Ulead DV Converter as you suggested. But when I try to open one of my 'failing' AVIs - the Converter replies that the AVI file is not Type 1. Any other ideas?
Anyone?
Can anyone see anything wrong/strange with the characteristics of my example AVI file as described by the Gspot output I listed in my first posting?
