  1. which is better? i'd suppose capturing is healthier for your pc because you can do it in real-time hence spending less time encoding and there is no need to rip the movie to hdd first...

    ---BUT---

i heard somewhere once that you lose audio/video quality when capturing in realtime on slower machines (im running only 500 mhz and 288 MB RAM)

someone pls list some pros/cons to either method of vcd encoding.

    thanks

  2. Yes you will loose quality if you capture instead of ripping no matter what the speed of your processor is.

You will lose the dolby digital 5.1/ac3 if you do capturing.

Also if you want to capture a dvd using a capture card you must have a standalone dvd player that can be hacked to get rid of the macrovision.

On your machine it will probably take a long time to rip but if you do the quality will be better than capturing>

    Just my two cents

  5. thanks for the info vcd4me...only thing that gets me is the time it takes to rip vs. what it does to capture

    one side question:
what exactly is motion search precision? i have always done the middle value because ive heard ppl say it doesnt matter. i tried to do the fast one the other day for the first time in a year of this and i didnt like the quality i got. could it just have been that movie? or does a better motion search precision really matter??

    another side question
what does FPU stand for? i noticed that setting in dvdx today...never noticed it before.

    peaceout for now
