    My XVCDs and XSVCDs are letterboxed. XVCD was at 352x480 mpeg-1 1500 (or 1800bps) and the XSVCD was 480x480 mpeg-2 at 3000bps. I am certain I selected full screen/keep aspect ratio in MPG. Is this just the nature of the beast?

    the letterboxed part. Not so bad on the XSVCD but huge black bars on the XVCD.

    It depends of your source.
    What's the format and aspect ratio of the source?
    By the way, I think both bars (XVCD and XSVCD) should have the same size (if the source is the same).
