  1. I was wondering if some one could point me in the direction of the best way to preserve original subtitles from a DVD rip. The movie in question is Life is Beautiful. I have done many DVD to XVCD conversions before, but never with subtitles. I usually use Clad DVD XP > Tmpgenc > Nero but can use different programs if I have to. An explanation or a link to the best VCD guide would be much appreciated.

Are the subtitles contained in the main vob files or do you have to rip a separate file from the DVD? If so, which one contains the subs?

    Thanks for all the help.

  2. Minimum info, but still some....

I did once SVCD with VCD subtitles from DVD. I used DVD2SVCD tool (look in guides or tools here). If you setup everything correctly it will do all that needs to be done and you don't have to do it step-by-step.... all integrated.

They'll be in the main VOB files. If you're making (X)VCD you can only make permanent (encoded as part of the video) subtitles. One good guide here is http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/userguides/87065.php, you can find a few others in the Edit section at the left. I use vobsub and avisynth, personally.

If you decide to try SVCD you can have selectable (sort of DVD-like) subtitles. It's kind of cool, but compatibility isn't that great.
