  1. I looked underneath a dvd-r that held a 2.53g video on it..and noticed an area that looked like the burnt media was separating from the dvd plastic above.
I had a dvd label on stuck on the top side of the dvd (wonder if that made it overheat, also noticed the label was peeling up a bit.

Anyway, I could actually flex this part of the dvd, and it almost sounded like it was cracked, but no crack was visible, just a 2inch or so area, near the edge of the dvd that looked a bit different from the rest of the dvd.

The media is dvd-r from memorex, and the underside looks ruby colored, shiny-red. I hope this doesn't denote a bad dvd-r disk. They cost about 2$ a piece, too much to burn many coasters.

Any suggestions as to what made this little area near the edge of the dvd (underside) start to sound and feel like it was coming undone? separating? overheating? not sure of the exact words to use.

Well, a cool way to destroy DVD-R is to separate the two plastic discs... when I took a few apart it looked like they're sealed with some glue on the outside, but if that's damaged the airseal is broken and the discs can be separated (the dye changes color when it's exposed to air).

In your case, the first think to ask is if the data is still readable. If yes, then you may want to hold off on destroying it. If not, then yes it was damaged and you should look into your methods or the discs.

  4. I only flexed it a bit to see if it was cracked, but noticed an odd creaking sound when flexing it on this particular bad spot.

it almost looked like an air bubble, and the dvd did freeze (video)
on a certain spot, so it looks like the media is hosed.

I just wondered what caused this?
