RE: 2nd PC system and posibility of becoming a Server
------------------------------------------------------
Well,
I made it here.
Ok, I managed to get my 2nd (OLD) pc up and running with my USB modem, and without a hitch! I have a bunch of things to do on this pc, as far as clearing out all my old junk, maybe burn everything I don't need on 2 cd-r's, as a way to quickly get things off and archived. I have a 2x2x6x CDRW on this machine.
It's a 4 year old Pentium MMX 233mhz piece of crap, but it works - still! I went through 3 hard-drives on this baby.
I have a 3g on it now.
Hay, I like the idea of using the modem (internet) from my main pc. I am going to use my main pc for capturing and encoding, but there may be times when I may be able to surf from there (main pc), instead of geting up and running to other pc. How's that done? If I have this machine that has the modem attached and so far, working very well, what do I need to do to get my main pc across from me to use it? I like this pocket size modem. It has lights and stuff and I can see it working, unlike the little software version of the status light on task tray. This one's tru-blue.
Well, I have my work cut out for me, and already pushing
11pm - and I'm loving every minute of it!![]()
![]()
So, anybody got any good suggestions on how to proceed or fine tune my goal. . .
Getting my self setup to become a Server??
All suggestions are welcomed!![]()

Hi
Well without spending moneynone... You would need a router then both machines can operate independently, but I don't know if there is and USB only ones. My machine has to be on before the other 2 can access the internet, it cost nothing to do this. But its not ideal something like this http://www.indypc.com/store.asp?id=544&type=&menu=Networking_ since you have Linksys Lan's you may like that. No USB though.
Why not try out the "Internet connection Sharing" it works well for me. You already have the hardwear.
-
You can also try running a proxy server program. There are a few you can get from http://www.download.com that are very small, very easy to use and free. One I have tried myself is AnalogX but there are several similar programs on there that work great.
-
Hi, forgot to say "Internet connection sharing" comes with Windows 98SE so its part of the os and fully supported by MS
Also since it very popular a lot of people have developed other programs around it. One of the best I have seen is the ICS Configuration program, it and lots of mappings can be found here.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/icsconfig_maps.htm -
I don't have Grokster, but another one I found to be pretty good is yaga share, http://www.yaga.com/download.html you can set up folders that are not searchable by all, you send a link to who you want, only they can download it from you, and they don't have to install yaga to download the file from you.

JFYI,
* I've managed to painstakenly PRUNE my hard-drive on 2nd pc.
about a days work - believe it or not!
* re-installed windows from scratch!
* spent many long hours today, finding necessary apps to include
in this NEW windows installations - another painstaken job!
* a few more odds and ends with finding all necessary apps and maby
a few fine tunes. . . modem, browser, desktop, folders, scandisk,
defrag, and a few more once overs, and I'll be ready to IMAGE the HD.
It's a very slow process for me, as I don't want to have to keep creating
new imaged cd-r's. But, I do want to get this project up and going, so
sooner or later, I'll have to stop and finanlize.
Let's see, where am a now? Oh, yes, i have to log off here, and connect
this cord to my modem and set my broswer to it and a few more tests.
Fewww! So much to do! But, I want the job done Right!! ...with no regrets!
Well, that's all for now. Haven't completely decided on which app to go with.
I think I'll explore different scenarios (apps) after I burn a CD-RW image.
When I've come to a discion, I'l finalize a cd-r image - this will be the disk I
put in my 2nd pc each day or two or whichever I decide - will have to play each
day as I go. Oh, I also heard of Apache. After searching some more on servers.
I came across this link: http://files.gordons.gen.nz:8888/videos/Other_TV/
It has a bunch of MPGs and AVIs - just what I was looking for (setup-wise). I this
approach for my 2nd pc system.
* Is this posible? (Apache)
* Any comments on this app?
* or anything I might of left out in my above process so far?
Any tips, advise or comments are greatly apprciated!
Well, it's pushing 2:30am here... So, see you later!
-
Ok,
I'm stuck! So far, I'm having some problems. . .
* I managed to finalize my process and am happy with it (for now).
* I ran the Norton Ghost 7.0, and have successfully imaged my HD
configuration and settings (windows and applicatoins, etc.).
I decided to give my project a test run, so I restarted the pc (with the
newly burned cd-r image of Hd in the drive), and when the pc started
booting up, I got drove not ready or non-boot disk error message.
I checked the cd and it has the iamge and ghost.exe on it. But, I can
boot into it (thought I set the cd to be a boot-image cd-r in ghost).
I was trying to create the scenario of me coming home from work, popping
in the imaged cd-r, (usually would already be in cd drive), and turn on pc.
What I thought was suppose to happen was, the pc boots up into the cd-rom
drive and ghost starts up, and my HD is re-imaged (not burned from cd, but
imaged from cd to HD).
Can anyone tell me what I did wrong, before I burn and waist more cd-r's?
If you need more details (screens, I'll re-run the bootup process and try and
remember the error messages) - so I can move on??
Thanks so much! -
the ripper,
Ok, but what about a solution to my prev. post?
I haven't tried ANY apps yet, as I have not ben able to figure
out my problem (above post) yet.
Oh, I have heard of "morpheus", but not "WIN MX" - "MX" for windows?
...or "windows mx"?
Thank you for your opinion
-
How many things at once do you want to do, the list is getting bigger and moving further and further away from your original post.
-
letmeinforgodsake,
Since I'm at a point where I'm stuck and can't find a solution (yet), it
doesn't hurt to hear what others have to say - even if that means
asking more questions. And posibly leading me in another direction.
But I don't think I've change direction from my origonal goal/post.
So, actually, I disagree!
OK, lets see..., my origonal goal was to find a storage site to house my clips for people to:
see, judge, compare, give me suggestions/tips to a better encode job, etc, etc.
Since I couldn't find any storage sites, with the exception of Yahoo Briefcase (30mb),
and since you (others not saying anything) told that it's difficult to retrieve from these storage outlets (Yahoo), I felt it necessary to seek a different route, not to mention reading other posts here, which led me in this direction (servers). So, in a way, it's a two parter... help with my encoding, and help with setting up a server.
I'm only so close to a sever. I just want it to be as safe as I can make it, which is why I went to the trouble with going the imaging route. I more than likely wont be re-imaging from cd-r back to HD every day (more I think about it), but maybe once a week or something. i'll play it by ear. I don't want to be left with a system full of AD-Ware or hacking items on this 2nd pc that I'm setting up as server.
But, once the server is up and running, I can safely house all my clips there, and to possibly use it for other purposes as well... I may decide to expand on it, i.e., storage for small apps or documents from or to work, a helpdesk type web page/site, etc. ...just a few ideas that come to mind.
But for now, my goal is to:
1) find a storage site - hence creating a "working" server on a 2nd pc (my storage site)
2) store my clips (encodes) on it.
3) post a link to it, for the VCDHelp people (aid me)
There... once all this is complete, I'll be hapyy, and you'll be (and others) as well!
...oops, not to mention the hackers out thereGranted, my 56k modem is no match against a DSL or Cable, but it's a solution to my problem
.
.
Then, we can get back to my Origonal post, which were the following posts I made:
* DVDx Rip samples (as promised) 3+ files
-- http://www.vcdhelp.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=55086&forum=10&1
* Here's a DVD Rip sample clip - 2772kb size - (UPDATED)
.
hope I haven't left any other links out.
Ok, as to which app (server) I decide to go with. . . I think I'll try them all, Grokster, Apachie, Yoga, Morpheus, to mention a few. ...till I'm satisified with the one I end up using.
I don't want to start testing these severs, until I have the imageing thing working first.
That's why it's taking so long - just to get a simple server going -sheees! But, in the long run, it's the long run, it'll be all worth it!
Ok buddy??
Now, can anybody tell me how to successfully burn a HD image to a BOOTable cd??
I have my bios set to boot from CD-ROM.
I found two files on my burned cd, the image file and ghost.exe
PS: while all tihs was going on, I've ben improving my encoding. (I have samples)

Hi
Well anyway...
Sorry, I'm only joking (Hold on I'm going to back up my system before I hit "Submit"
Well I do hope you get it all sorted out, perhaps give me a call around Christmas ?(Joke)
Just a quick one, I think the peer-to-peer idea is no use to you, I did not know your speed at the time. At 56K download it would take until Christmas to download them. Maybe its a hassle for you uploading them to a server but for other people it will be better.
Just one other thing......Have you not installed a firewall ?. If you are concerned then maybe you should have one installed. I can highly recommend the Norton Personal Firewall, it also comes with add blocking to kill all those banners that slow down page loading. And NOTHING can get past it. Try the hack test on they're site.
"and since you (others not saying anything) " mmm, yes well carry on with Yahoo then, I guess if you get one download from them per year then you will be OK, Did anyone else download the movie by the way ?I might have missed the response from them ??, but excluding the download limit, they are a busy server, if you remember it took me 3 minuets to get them, when I could have downloaded 20 Mp3's in that time
(Joke)
So anyway, Ill let you carry on hope you get it all sorted out, and it works very well. As for the boot CD does it need to be bootable ? do you have a floppy drive ?. Yes I made a bootable CD with Easy CD creator, Norton Ghost does it also, I made one today to try out XP but that darn image was too big for one cd, so had to remove quite a lot. I tell you a good program it comes with easy cd creator and its called "Take two" makes a backup direct to cd(s) and a floppy to boot from.

letmeinforgodsake,
Hello.
As to the 56k or less throughput, I'm really not concirned with. If people are curious AND willing to help, they'll go and visit my server and give the download a shot (ok, at 56 or less speed), but, there wont be that annoying problem you and quite possibly others have ben having in trying to download the sample clips. Maybe other people had trouble but didn't think it was worth it and so, moved on. That's ok, I guess. But, using my server, they (hopefully) wont have any problems - with the exception of the slow download.
I'm comfortable with the 56k download speed I have. Course, I'd love the DSL or faster speed there is to offer, but I just can't afford the $$$.
I understand that DirectV offers DSL, but I think they require wiring in the buidling, and I don't understand why this is so, if they are using my dish? Anyway, the price is $49.95, but i'm not going this route becuase of the possible wiring that may have to be done (I don't know how long I'll be in this appartment
Anyway, as I mentioned in one of my prev. post, there was a site that was/is set up as a server, and has many sample clips there, but it is 33.6k. I was able to donwload with no problem, (about 3.5k/sec), but that was fine with me, as long as I had no problemsIt's better than nothing! Maybe there are others who are not as frigit over speed - so long as they can sample a clip or to. After all, we are all here to help one another
I, personally dont care/mind about the speed being 33.6 or 56 or faaster, (faster is better
). I'm here to help, and/or be helped
. If someone has a sever based setup, and has clips to offer as samples or "help with this clip", I'll give it a shot and try and download it. Hopefully, it wont be 50mb or more. 5, 10 or even 20mb is fine with me - as I do these kinds of downloads daily anyway
I'm ankcious (spelling) to post my samples. Don't care about the speed. They'll be out there for the picking, if you so choose
Anyway, I hope you and others will help me out once everything is settled with my
* bootable imaged cd
* server
So, please don't be too scared away from my 56k (53k) speed - K?
Thank you for all the help you and other posters have ben suppling. -
Anybody knowledgable with North Ghost?
Here's my continued problem with trying to make a bootable CD imaged disk:
Ok, I still can't get a bootable CD. The imaged cd is fine, and managed to burn on a CDRW, but for some reason, the system files are not being copied onto the CD - even though I select the make CD bootable in North Ghost. It looks like the process starts - seems to copy from A: disk, but once the process is finished, and I look at the cd, no system files, only Ghost.exe and the .GHO image file. So, I'm still stuck!
Thank you for any help available ! -
Have you tried copying a set of system files from the hard drive to floppy ?. It varies from OS to OS, for example windows 95c you can copy them. Windows 98 you cannot, they need to be "Sys a:" for the files to be in the boot sector of the floppy.
Its only a hunch, but try formatting a floppy and copy the system files over and see if you can boot from this floppy, if you cannot then that is your problem.
You need to sys the cd rom
I dont think Ghost will take them as an image but as a file copy and that wont work. (Think)
Why do you need to boot from it, whats wrong with a floppy? -
Afternoon all,
Ok, I did some tests last night, but ran into some problems.
* YOGA - installed ok, but its a peer-to-peer
-- not exactly what i'm looking for. I don't want to have to constantly monitor
-- who to give access to (via their e-mail). I only want to set it up once, as a web
-- page and so this way, people, at ANY itme can go to it, without me having to
-- expect an e-mail or another post here, asking me to set them up with access.
* GROKSTER - installed o, but its a peer-to-peer
-- again, same as above!
* APACHIE (v1.3.20) - installation failed!
boo, hoo!
-- it doesn't have an installation (setup.exe/install.exe).
-- it looks like it's an C compiler is needed. Like i'm gonna have that availalbe!
-- I have delphi 6, I don't use C. I don't even like C !!
Does anybody know of an already compiled versoin of Apachie???
Or, another alternative to Apachie like features - please, no peer-to-peer.
Again, I want to setup a web page on my hard drive (2nd pc) and have this as a
server. I'm going to connect a 2nd harddrive 1gig and use that as my storage/server
medium. I don't want people calling me up, "can I have access, herere's my email
adress?". ...just go to the page and click the link to whatever files are on the 1g Hd.
Please, can anyone help me out here??
Thank you! -
Ok,
I'm finally back, and glad to say have made some progress.
Since I was not successful with grokster, apache, tinyweb, yoga, ect.
I have found another web server app, which finally works.
I'm currently using MS Personal Web Server. Ok, maybe people here
don't like it, or have their negative opions about it - which is fine with me.
But, it's the only thing I could get to work for me and actually do what
I want it to do, based on my needs. It's a liitle tricky though.
I couldn't use the http://server-name/... thing - (computer name). Instead,
i had to use the http://n.n.n.n/ Once I figured this out people could see
my web server (my pc).
Now, all I have to do is come up with a standard approach to listng my files...
maybe a table format or something. I've ben experiment with this a little today.
basically, the layout'll prob. be somethings like:
filensme --- size --- type --- description --- dated
--------------------------------------------------------
clip-01 --- 2mb --- Cap
clip-02 --- 5mb --- Cap
clip-03 --- 7mb --- Rip
Ok, so, my only problem is, since my IP address number always changes, how
do I syncrinise a new IP address number every time I log on? And, since I have
to use the http://n.n.n.n/ route, it has to proceed every filename in the link, which
means, I have to change every filename link in the listing above, i.e., today, my link:
* clip-02 would be, http://100.20.15.01/newserver/caps
and then for tomorrow, it would have to be something like:
* clip-02 would be, http://114.13.05.41/newserver/caps
QUESTION:
Does anybody have a suggestion to the above problem?
Other thant that above, everything else seems to be ready. I can't garantee I'll always
be connected, but I'll just post here or there to let anyone know - till I can get a
permanant connection.
-------------------------
Oh, not to change the subject, but anyways' I've ben experimenting with VHS captures,
and I must say, after final encode to MPEG-2, (SVCD) quality is pretty good on my standalone dvd player. I couldn't believe the quality of the tape. Its a childrens tape (a coworker daughter watches it every day), and still, the quality is pretty good. I don't know if any of you's have good or bad experience on VHS captures, but for my first (ok, 3rd) cap, I'm ok with the quality. i'll try another cap, but w/ a newer tape I haven't used yet, and see what's the difference, if any.
-------------------------
Well, see you's later. -
Oh good, looking forward to you posting your IP address, then we can all dig out the port scanners and have a good look around your hard drive, mabe change a few things, tidy up a bit like
-
Apache runs on Linux.
If you don't have access to IIS then PWS is fine.
Set up an http with directory listing.
...and for god sake's man, put some thought into a firewall before you post your ip address to the world. Something cheap or free like SecurePoint/Snort/Hogwash.
