  1. I'm looking for a DVD player that meets the following requirements:

    * Highly compact - Shoebox dimensions would be the absolute max, if you reduce the height by an inch or so.
    * No screen - The unit will be plugged into existing TV sets
    * Relatively durable - I'm not planning on dropping it out of windows, but it will be moved fairly frequently.
    * Inexpensive - preferably under $75US

    S-Video connector is nice, but not critical. Same goes for Dolby etc. I'm not planning on hooking up the unit to a sound system more complex than the built-in TV speakers. A remote control would also be useful, but again, it's not critical.

    The Sony DVP-PQ1 is the closest thing I've found, but it's a little feature-heavy, and the price is higher than what I'm looking for.

    Any ideas? Does this sort of thing even exist?

    That Sony is down to $100 at Circuit City.

    It is confirmed to play both DVD-R and -RW recorded discs.

  4. The Lasonic player looks great, but the seller(s) on eBay are charging $20 for ground shipping(!) That brings the total within $5-10 of the Sony model. Hrm. I'll keep shopping around, thanks!

    If anyone can point me at other sellers or models, please let me know!

  5. You should give a chance to Koss. At least read review here at vcdhelp "DVD Players" section. You can still return it if it is not what you need

  6. I'll check out the Koss, but the "standard" price for the unit is as high (or higher) than the Sony model at $100US.

  7. I just saw Philips DVD580MT for $99 in Target.... looks realy great. A lots of formats, 12V, Multichanel Out (DD and DTS). Can be placed verticaly. Can play PAL/NTSC but no conversion (from manual on the web). So for PAL disc you need PAL TV (or multi format TV).
