Yesterday I started my encode, or should I say downgrading, of Heat a 172 minute movie. The two original files are 5.72 gigs [M2V] and 468.3 [AC3]. So far it has processed about 4.3 gigs of the whole file [which muxed would be 6.5 gigs] and it has been about 24 hours, this seems like a long time to me.
However I was using iTunes yesterday and the internet this morning, but I still don't think it should take this long to do the encode.
Running: TiPB G4 500, 512 Ram, using a 7200 RPM external HD
thx.

actually unfortunately a lot of the processes involved take a LONG time, since it doesnt need to JUST convert alone-- needs to mux to 4 gig segments THEN encode one after another THEN join the segments and then mux and so on--- and since a lot of these binaries arent nearly as optimized w/altivec as they could be they don't run so fast on lower level machines. On my DP 800 with 768 of ram it takes me about double realtime with the default settings, and even longer when i sacrifice speed for quality.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind. -
Shucks... also, here is a little idea that I thought of since I was wondering about required disc space...
maybe you could add a little feature that do the following:
-calculate the approx amount of disc space required for the encode (which you already do essentially with the bitrate calculator)
-check output disc for that amount of space
-warn that they don't have enough space if they don't
Just a little feature that makes the AfroPic package a little smoother and refined.
PS. Also, sometimes I have no clue if I should have multiplex selected depending on what I am doing... so if i am making a dvd i should be able to select "making a dvd" or something and then have everything be set to the correct settings [48k audio, multiplex (i think), MPEG2 video, etc][*]_BonKer$_[*] -
I used AfroPic on a 500MHz G3 iMac on a 1 hour 40 minute VOB file from an interlaced NTSC source. All settings were at default except I selected DEINTERLACE to produce a progressive output. Three days later (no joke) the encode finished. Thank God Santa brought me a Powerbook to keep withdrawal at an absolute minimum.

AHHHHHH!!! SO after 30+ hours of encoding and slowing my computer down I woke up to find that there was an empty folder called MY_DVD and my original M2V and AC3 files. For some reason there was an error and instead of taking the newly encoded video and audio and turning it into a DVD image ready to burn it just cleared the files and left me with my originals. I am sure I am just missing something from my /bin folder, so please point me to the file that I can place in there. Here is the output from the point after the encoding of the video since everything was fine up until then... 30 hours!!
