One would think.. (by that, i mean, i would think)... that when encoding from a DVD->VCD that it would take longer then DVD->DVD-R. Not so though. I would think that since there is less compression?/encoding going on to get the final output from 7GB+ to 4.3GB as opposed to 7GB+ to 775MB. Any simple explanation for this?
BTW.. encoding times arent even close.. VCD encoding takes about 10-20 hours DVD-R encoding takes 55 hours +

Its quite simple really, VCD is 352*240 and DVD is 720*480. So when encoding to DVD it has to generate (encode) at least 4 times as much data per frame (do the maths) so it is going to take 4 times as long, everything else being equal. To make matters worse, VCD is constant bitrate whereas most DVD's will be encoded with a variable bitrate, thus more complex algorithms must be used to calculate suitable bitrate allocation, extending encoding time even further.

Johneboy,
Dude what re encoding software are you using? 55Hrs??? I used rempeg to re encode AOTC and it took 7 Hrs. I have re encoded several and the most it has taken was 8 Hrs. I'm only running a 1.2Ghz with 256 Meg ram. I have been using this guys guide. Excellent guide by the way. www.paulgrimes.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk I do use smart ripper rather than Decrypter.
Good luck -
no kidding where in the heck are you getting these encoding times. DVD-R encoding takes 55 hours what kind of computer are you running. sounds like something built in the 80's that take up the whole room. when i encode dvd it takes like 2 hours to go a 2 hour movie. i have a P4 1.7 with 384 ram. but i am also using CCE.

less bits = less time to encode. VCD is only 1150Kbps.
Btw... 55hrs? what are you doing this on a 386? haha.
CCE takes me 1 hr 35 minutes to do a 3-pass VBR encode of a
2 hour movie.

FYI all,
Im using TMPGenc Plus 2.59 on a K6-2 500Mhz w/ 160MB of RAM
so i KNOW it's slow..
Although currently, "Black Hawk Down" seems to be a bit more "speedier" at 34 Hours eta. -
Even my PII 333 encodes in under 24 hours. But I generally use it to rip and encode on the Athlon.
