they are the same drive but one is retail. Also i looked at the spec they listed on buy.com and the retail has 2 mb and the other one does not. what is the difference and is the regular better than the retail for video recording and editing, or does it matter? Thanks for any help.

  2. Check the model numbers...if they're the same, and the non-retail is cheaper...get it. I have 2 IBM Deskstars, and will have 3 soon.

  4. Over the years I've bought over a dozen IBM deskstars. They are heavier, quiter, and I have yet to have one fail. The difference between OEM and retail is basically the box and they usually throw in rails which you probably won't need anyway. Forget model numbers. Check size, RPM and EIDE rating. If two models match those values and they are from the same manufacturer, the difference in the what I said.

  5. You are lucky. Over the years (thanks to replacements within the warranty period), I ve had 5 deskstars die on me on separate systems that I used for video capture and edition. I now stay away from them like the plague, preferring to stay with Maxtor and Quantum, my personal fav.
    Cheers

  6. IBM has a class action lawsuit filed against them for the extreme failure rate that the Deskstar GXPs have been experiencing. I have bought 6 within the last year and all six have failed. I highly recommend staying away from them.

Old Quantums are superb. Then Quantum got cheap. Quantums made 10 years ago are still running strong, but where I used to work they used Quantums in their desktops and we had 6 or 7 drive failures out of 20 machines in under one year. According to the PC support guys our experiences were typical.

I assume that now that Maxtor owns Quantum they have about the same quality. Old Maxtors were great (just a few years back I found myself dealing with 200MB Maxtor drives that worked perfectly), then Maxtor made a bunch of garbage, then they started making reasonable-quality stuff again.

It seems like all the big drive makers have gone through phases like this, even Seagate had a few bad batches of IDE drives. It just took IBM a little longer to have it happen.

  12. Well to carry on a dead topic. I have 3 120GB deskstars. The first one, I bought when the 120GB deskstars were first released (cost over £300) so you can probrably work out how long I have had it, I can't remember. My PC never gets switched off, have not had 1 fail yet, my case is well ventilated though, with many fans.
