Wondered if there was a site or a list that shows what DVD movies are too big to fit on a DVD-R after stripping the audio/subtitles?

    example-

    Lord of the Rings
    Vanilla Sky
    Black Hawk Down

  2. I dont know of any such site......I guess im wondering why everyone goes to all the trouble of getting a movie on 1 disk when its so easy to split the ones that are needed and put on 2 disks....with the same quality of the original dvd. Geez the price of dvd-rw's are under a dollar.....

For the exact same reason that remote controls have become an essential part of life and the tube.

IMDB.com has a listing of what DVDs are less than 4.3 gig, I believe if you do a search for SS\SL (single sided\single layer) there are about 7300 movies in alphabetical order that will fit entirely on one DVD.

True.. Granted there are quite a few errors as well.. The place I have found with the least amout of errors is http://www.digitallyobsessed.com (they must actually check the disc for DVD5/DVD9 when they review it).

The only thing is not EVERY movie is on the site as it's only the ones they have gotten around to reviewing.. But as far as reviews go and giving the layer information it's the best site going...

http://www.imdb.com/Sections/DVDs/DiscFormats/ is the link I was referring to. I guess a person could cross reference the imdb with the other link spudz posted to get accurate answers but at least it's a starting point.

On my way to see what James Bond movies are listed at digitallyobsessed.

    Cheers!

OK, I give up Spudz - where on the site does it give you the size of the DVD?

    Thanks!

I have seen the site and list of DVDs that are under 4.7gigs. The reason i ask is that i want to avoid those bigger movies cause i also dont like swapping discs. I just to get movies that will fit on 1 dvdr after stripping to avoid 2 discs.

  10. 1st of all if getting up is too annoying, wow might hurt yourself, then just reencode the darn thing, DVD2DVDR does a great job and it can do it overnight and be ready to author in the morning and the quality looks no different than the original. I even got one on one DVD+R and also included the Audio commentary track also. The bitrate was still around 5000 average.

  11. Heretic:

It's there.. When I first visited the site it took me a while to find where that info was as well...

If you go to this link for eg...

    http://www.digitallyobsessed.com/showreview.php3?ID=586

You will see under disc extras the info you want.. I'll paste below...

    Disc Extras
    Full Motion menu with music
    Scene Access with 32 cues
Subtitles/Captions in English captions, Spanish and French subtitles with remote access
    3 Original Trailer(s)
    4 TV Spots/Teasers
    1 Deleted Scenes
    2 Documentaries
1 Feature commentary by Director John Glen, members of the cast and crew
    Packaging: Alpha
    Picture Disc
    1 Disc
    1-Sided disc(s)
    Layers: single
    Layers Switch: 01h:21m:02s

See right above me is the layer info... They even tell you the layer switch point sometimes...

    Good luck.

    Spudz

P.S. This is for a bond movie btw:

Ahhh...it's all coming into focus now. So if it says single layer, that means the whole DVD can be backed up via rip, reburn?

  13. Actually now that I look above there is a mistake.. One of the few on the site. Obvously they meant to right Dual Layer not Single Layer because they tell you the layer switch point. If it was Single Layer there would be no layer switch point of course.

So to answer your question, yes if it says single layer then it can be backed up directly with something like DVD Decrypter. Except in the case of the eg. above as it's clearly not a single layer movie.
