  1. I have been ripping to my HD & using DVD2AVI to determine if the movie is Progressive or Interlaced, or a hybrid. I have been reading that a lot of people use bitrateviewer to do the same. My question is basically, what are the advantages, if any, of bitrateviewer over DVD2AVI? Thanks in advance

Bitrate viewer only looks at the flags once (and if you start at VTS_01_1.VOB, you are likely to get an interlaced header). DVD2AVI can also give you false readings, but it is a little more accurate, since it continually reports the flag status.

If your video was originally a theatrical release, then it is 99.99% probable that it is progressive.

If it was originally a production for TV, then it could be either (depending on whether or not they filmed in FILM or TAPE).

If it was a television production with a lot of post production special effects, then it will probably be a hybrid (Star Trek: TNG is a hybrid).

In short, you have to "know your source". You may have to apply different techniques to different sections of the video, depending on their structure.

  4. hello again SLK @ ADDER, I appreciate the info. I guess being that I am ONLY ripping theatrical releases, then I guess I will continue to use DVD2AVI if I have any questions. Otherwise, I will assume they are progressive, because most are. Thanks
