I've ripped a ton of my own DVDs for backup purposes. I generally convert to VCD or SVCD, since I can't afford the DVDR drive yet. (Getting close, though!)
Tonight I was working on "Amadeus." About halfway through the first VOB file, SmartRipper pooped out. Never had that happen before. The "broken blocks" area went red, but showed zero broken blocks. SmartRipper froze up -- after about ten minutes I killed it with the old end task.
Any idea what is causing this? The error is consistent. I may try another ripper, but I'm set in my ways! Any help appreciated.

try dvddecryptor, it usually rips movies that smartripper can't handle...
otherwise, make sure the bottom of the DVD has NO scratches, dust, dirt at all. your dvd-rom may be really picky about that.
also, when playing the movie right before you're about to rip, try jumping to different chapters so that your dvd-rom plays all the vob files. sometimes, smartripper has problems unlocking (ripping) the later vobs if you just play the first vob for a couple of seconds and then pause (or shutdown) the player. -
That happend to me with LOTR, no way would it finish, no dirt or scratches
on the DVD.
Borrowed another DVD, and it ripped first time, I can only guess that
first DVD had some flaw, although it played in the DVD player without a
hitch.
Smart Ripper, has been great for me!.
