Yes U can. I used Ulead Video Studio just to make a test, and it worked. The problems started when I tried to play it in my stand alone. The data rate was simply too high for my DVD reader to keep up with, so both audio & video paused every other second to wait for data to be available from the CD, then playing for a second again, stopping... Simply unwatchable.
Worked fine on the computer tho, using PowerDVD

Thnx for the quick replies, i have read somewhere that to burn a DVD u have to import an .m2v file. Do you think it would be possible to burn a .m2v file which would actually b an SVCD instead of a DVD?

Well, m2v is MPEG2 video, so if it's within SVCD specs, (bitrate, framerate, resolution) - yes, when multiplexed as SVCD MPEG2 stream. But if it's a DVD m2v, then neither resolution nor bitrate are within SVCD specs, and will most likely not work.

Thnx. But one last question. (i think) can the DVD bitrate range from anywhere from 0 --> 9800 kbs? if so, it would b possible to encode a DVD to fit in 2 CDs and have the same quality as an SVCD right?

Hmm... Yes, I can't see any problems with that - besides the resolution:
    PAL DVD:
    720 x 576 pixels, 352 x 288 pixels, 352 x 576 pixels

    PAL SVCD:
    480 x 576 pixels.

Nope - no idea. As I said, I just did a test to see if it was at all possible, and dropped it, as my DVD choked. I'd guess that Video Studio can neither import nor write AC3, but again, this may depend on what codecs are installed on your system.

  9. Get these standard tools from the tool links in this forum :

    smartrip, dvd2avi, tmpgenc

    Then

Use smartripper and get the chapter/s you want, load the chapter into DVD2AVI, use the slide bar to specific 'start' and 'stop'. Run DVD2AVI, then use TMPGENC to encode to VCD or SVCD. Burn it into a CD. Watch it.

You has a Sony player. It most likely will worked with CDR/W even many models don't offically support CDR or CR/W.

  10. Does anyone think about issue with the DVD player motor spinning too fast ? And this could reduce the life span of the DVD player.
In order to reach high bit rate, for example 6000Kbits/s, the DVD must spin about 6X faster than a typical DVD or VCD.
It is well known that CD-ROM and CD writers drivers can spin very very fast (52X) but the drive in the DVD player may not be designed for that speed.
    Be aware.

I wouldn't worry - if it's a 2 spin drive, then 2 spin is what it's gonna spin, no matter how fast I try to read from it. What I'll have to worry about is how it will look & sound when the drive can't deliver data at the rate I want it to. DVD drives like to spin constantly - that is, not be used as data drives, but that only applies to drives hooked up to a computer.

  12. the spin speed is precisely the issue with most miniDVD discs on a standalone.
The drive can't spin fast enough to maintain the datarate, until the disc is about halfway through, then the diameter gets large enough that the spinning is sufficient.

a miniDVD typically only holds 15 minutes of movie per disc, though.
Some standalone players have drives that can be swapped out with PC DVDROM drives, for a faster drive upgrade. But this is not something that is reccommended for the weak of skillz. (I don't even know that I'd try it)

My DVD player plays VCDs and DVD but not SVCDs, i have found a brand of CDRs which work on it and all CDRWs work on it although not as well as the CDrs ( therse are PRINCO). There are no problems with overheating or super speed spinning or n e thing
