  1. Hi there! Hopefully someone here can help me out.. I just purchased a Sony DRU500A and wanted to see if DVDXCOPY worked with it. I had found an older version 1.0.625 and installed it, then installed the drivers. I rebooted and upon startup got about 5-6 error messages in a row that various driver files attempting to be installed would potentially render my cdrom drives unusable. There was an option with each error to remove the file from the registery, which I did for each one. Now, whenever I insert a blank dvd-r into my dru500a it's title in My Computer changes to "Cdrom Drive" where it used to state DVD R/W etc.. Also, without a blank in the drive, it reads simply DVD-R (not the R/W previously mentioned). This wouldn't be too bad, but now the drive apparently acts like a cdrom drive when trying to burn dvds, and most of my programs screw up trying to burn with it. I'm wondering if there's a way to completely remove the drivers (and any "arrows" pointing towards them) that were installed from this old file.. I did try downloading the new version of DVDXCOPY from the homepage and installing just the drivers - this time no errors on reboot but the same "CDRom" problem remains unsolved. Also uninstalled the actual drive and let XP recognise it as new hardware again, but after recognising the dru500a by name it says "Found new hardware: CDRom Drive" so it looks like those faulty drivers are set to be installed by default for a new cd/dvd burner now? While I do realise that the old file I got is probably of dubious origins, I just wanted to check to see if the program would work for me. The program still looks good and I was considering buying it originally, but obviously not if it's going to mess up my drivers, etc. Please help if you can, and thanks in advance.

  2. i tried to mess around with dvd xcopy too. got the lastest ver and installed it and after installing their set of drivers and reboot, my computer said that it was unable to load driver for ALL of my cd/dvd drives. had to uninstall the damn program and their drivers to get everything back. Seemed like they were using a set of Gears drivers. anyway, i am staying away from this. I am going to use ifoedit to split my dvd backups into 2 dvds from now on.

  3. Had the same problem with the Gear Drivers! I was unable to access any of my DVD/CD-Rs. Even after uninstalling XCopy and reinstalling drivers the problem persisted...

  4. Same screw up after installing DVDXCOPY drivers but was able to get out of the mess by going back to previous state using system restore.

Glad I was able to go back.

  5. You can get around the problems by installing the gear driver from DVDXCopy's ftp site.
The standalone drivers install works fine.

I had the exact same problems as everyone (I tried all the available versions of the full install of DVDXcopy to no avail)

Once I ran the driver setup util, everything worked fine.

  6. SFAIK, DVDXCOPY works by constantly stopping and starting your DVD drive, resulting in increased wear and tear which many avoid for their DVD-ROM drives. I definitely would not use such a program with a DVD burner.

RHMoore, the owner of 321Studios (the company that created DVDXCopy) has stated that anyone who tries to use an illegal copy of the program or password would be in for a suprise. Rather than have a free download to try it, the company offers a no-time-limit refund. I think you just might have gotten the suprise. I have heard cases where the only solution was to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch.
