  1. Hi, I am getting ready to purchase a dvd writer, but in the meantime I was wondering if you could use dvd recordable disks in a regular cd writer. The reason I ask is because the capacity is so much more than cdrs. I would like to store my vcds or svcds on just one disc, but I dont want to lower the bitrate to fit the movie on one disc.

No, you can't use dvdr/ws in cd writers. And you can not burn vcd or svcd on a dvdr/w, you must convert the vcd, svcd to standard dvd format
