Over the weekend I used ReMPEG to re-encode 2 movies: Gladiator at 58% and Hannibal at 66%. Strangely enough Gladiator came out much better. Hannibal starts slowly and looks jerky and blocky, plus the first scenes with Jodie Foster, her face looks terribly blocky.

Why does ReMPEG work better at a lower bitrate on Gladiator then Hannibal? Is it more suitable to certain types of movies (i.e. more action), or is it dependant on more color?

There does not appear to be many options in ReMPEG to change to when should it be used? I know I can use TMPGENc but it runs 3-4X slower.

I am encouraged that you find TMPGENc faster. What settings do you use i.e. CQ, VBR 2 pass etc, DCT settings etc. On Hannibal, ReMPEG took 9 hours, TMPGENc took 36 so I am interested in how you managed to achieve this as TMPGENc is definitely a better encoding mechanism.

Actually I think ReMPEG does not really encode it just bit strips but I don't know enough to be sure. Perhaps the experts could shed some light on this. The other item they should comment on is: At what bitrate ratio should you switch from ReMPEG2 to TMPGENc? Gut feel says you should use ReMPEG2 above 85%, any less use TMPGENc.

    Thoughts folks?.

36 hours? it should only take about 4 to 6. but i don't know. i used to have tmpgenc but then i got tmpgenc plus. i encode much faster with the plus version. maybe you should do that.
