  1. I was thinking about purchasing a TiVO or replay TV and was wondering how easy it was to transfer the video from the unit and convert the video to a VCD or SVCD. Can the commercials be edited out? Also, which unit is better, Tivo or Replay? Another thing I was wondering was if you can export video from your Mac back out to the unit? Thanks for the info.

The ReplayTV units store their shows in MPEG-2 format 720x480 in the high and medium quality modes, ideal for making DVD-R's.

The ReplayTV 4000 and 4500 series have ethernet ports on them which, in combination with a freeware program called DVArchive, lets you digitally copy the shows to your PC for editing and burning with your favorite editing and authoring programs. No capturing required!

The new ReplayTV 5000 series also has ethernet ports, but the software is somehow different and I don't believe anyone's figured out how to copy off the shows. Other than capturing them, that is.

  4. Ive got a Dish 501 DVR connected to (s video) a Canopus ADVC-100 (DV converter box) thats connected to mac via FireWire. Import into iMovie and then make SVCDs.

I wish the Dish 501 digital vidio recorder had a firewire port or ethernet.
    That would be sweet.

SCB do you have digital cable? You might want to look at satelite dish or direct. Why would you want to go back to the VDR?

The best thing I like about the Dish 501 DVR is the 30sec skip forward button. (Zap the commercials baby) And pause live TV. Oh, Dish has no monthly fee for the DVR tv program guide.

  5. I seem to recall being able to directly output a digital file is one of the things that got the studios all up in arms over Replay. They didn't like the commercial jump, but others have that. My guess is that they've purposely deleted the export ability.

so that is PC software only?? doesnt help much for mac users.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

DVArchive is written in Java and can run on just about any platform, including Linux and Mac.
