I was desperately wondering what is the best way to archive old family tapes that are on Hi8 camera tapes, and old VHS tapes without losing much (if any noticeable) quality?
Is my best bet to put them on VCD?? bacially how can I do this without losing much quality?
*Note for my Hi8 tapes I can use my new Digital Camera to read it and transfer it to the cpu to make it digital....but my question is how do I do this without losing quality...which format do I save it as and how can I make it work?
thanks

Well, transfering Hi-8 tapes to vcd shouldn't be a problem. If your bringing it in via a firewire port with your digital 8 camera that would be fine. Actually if you captured the picture in analog with a SVHS cable it would also be fine.
VHS sucks and I have never really gotten the quality that I was satisfied with (it came close)when capturin in analog. If your digital camcorder has a analog pass through that may be your best bet.
