I just contacted www.videoguys.com to purchase the Pioneer DVR-A04 and they told me they now have the new A05 in stock. It seems the A05 is faster but it also has a slightly different software package. Are there any drawbacks to the A05? Please advise?

Someone posted here that only set-top players produced from here on will play the discs burned at 4x (but I don't know if that's true). Other than the speed increase, I don't know if the a05 is that much better, but I do think it's quite a bit more expensive. I don't know what your software choices are but read up on both of them to see which would be more useful.

i thought it was other way around - that 4x media will only play in stand alone that is most recent .. well i have some 10x media now but no burner yet to try it .. untill company springs for yet another burner ..

I'll have to look into the media playback thing but to answer your question on price... they were selling the A05 for the same $299 (plus free s/h)

Other than possible software in box, there are some technical differences, albeit most consider them minor changes. Best thing to do is look over these files and see the progression from the first model and see where the changes were made.
