I might get a new desktop for Christmas, I need it to be very very cheap.
I'm thinking of building one. That way I can focus only on what I need. I need a fast CPU, large hard drive, fast internal bus and a firewire card.
In shopping online, I'm concerned I'm paying for software I don't want. I can outfit the comptuer with all the software it needs. I dont need a second copy of XP or Office.

Cheaper to build, you can also customise it to your exact specifications.

I have had a discussion on this subject before -
You can find everything you need to build a computer here:
http://www.pricewatch.com
and how to build it here:
http://www.tomshardware.com -
www.newegg.com
www.googlegear.com
you can build a computer from those two(start with newegg) and have it 3 to 4 days to the eastcoast.
buy the hard drive OEM,i paid $220 vs $300 for retail for mine. -

Please do yourself a favor and check out www.tigerdirect.com
They always have great deals. I got a kit from them in oct of 2001, to use for this new computer based djing system.
The card the dj company was recomending was around $100 (sound blaster live)
The kit I bought for $140 had the platnum version of this sound card built in. which if you bought the sound blaster live platinum version it would cost around $140 by itself. I coulddn't go wrong it was like getting a free computer.
Hope this helps

Building your own computer is also a really good way to find out how everything works together. There's something about actually putting in the parts yourself, that makes the light bulb go on, above your head.
I like the fact that you can buy only what you need or want. A lot of boxed systems are good, but you pay for crap that you'll never use. Upgrading them can be a bitch, too.
Another advantage to building a box yourself, is that you know exactly what you put in there. That makes troubleshooting a lot easier.
It's also fun to tweak your computer and see what works and what doesn't, in order to squeeze the most stability or speed out of it. -
