tmpg enc -- quality?

Hi im new to this board...and well...the whole ripping/.encoding scene really..so heres my question....

ive seen in many walkthroughs where ppl turn up the output quality on tmpg enc i tried to do this but the actual slider is shaded out????
do i need some other codecs or whut?

turn up the output quality ?

any control in TMPGenc can be "unlocked" two ways : 1. click on the name of the control to the left of the setting and select "lock" or "unlock"

or

load "unlock" template found in templates\extras
