  1. I'm thinking of buying the fore mentioned DVD burner but am getting alittle worried of all the negative feedback I'm reading. Is the burner that bad? or is it the fact that Users are trying to use software that hasn't been tested with it. I spent 2-4 months reading reviews of the Sony NS405S before I decided to buy it. It turns out it's a pretty good all rounder. I thought it may be prudent to buy a burner from the same manufacturer to give me a good chance of playing home made DVDs. My primary requirements are to...

    1. Record my home VHS tapes to DVD (I want to use the full capacity of the disk i.e 4.7 gig) and play them on my Sony NS405S.
    2. Use the DVDs to backup my harddrive (currently I use 4 CD-RW to backup the major components)
    3. Have a drive that won't be obsolete in 2 years.

I would appreciate any help in clearing up these issue.

    Thanks.
    Indy

  3. I've had the DRU500A for a week now and I have to say that I am very satisfied with it. Remember that most of the posts concerning this drive were made when it barely hit the shelves, so of course there were/are a few issues with it. I have experienced none of them. It installed easily and flawlessly, and after I updated nero to .17 it worked like a dream. As for the "bad media" posts, well, just don't buy cheap crappy media and you won't have any problem. I got mine at circuit city, and with the 30 day trial period you can't lose! Good luck!

  4. I bought my Sony DRU-500A a couple of days ago. It's awesome!!! The installation was easy and I haven't had any problem burning .IFO or .img files. Of course, I learned the hard way by making some coasters, but after I updated the firmware. It took care most of the incompatiblity for the name brand media.

However, I didnt' buy this writer in order to buy expensive media. I tried Princo DVD-R 1X with white glossy top. They SUCKs!!!! Got 5 out of 5 coasters!!!!

I using Ritek DVD-R 1X now and it's flawless (100 pk spindle). Burn around 15 DVDs already!!!! Now, I'm in search for a 2X generic media that's around $1.50 a piece or less. Once, I find one that's flawless like the Ritek, then I'm set!!!!

I burned VCDs and SVCDs at 24X with generic CD-R/RW and had no problems with it. I pretty much happy with it. All in all this writer is AMAZING!!!!

  5. I have had my Sony DRU500A for exactly two days now. I've only had a chance to burn 3 DVD-R's and 1 DVD-RW, but I haven't had a coaster yet. Right now, however, I am using Sony media (it was on sale at OfficeMax a week or two ago). I tested it with one home DV movie, and a couple DVD-5 movies, but I haven't tried copying a DVD-9 disc yet.

I'm considering purchasing OPTODISC media from NewEgg.com, but I was hoping to find out if anyone had any experience using it with the DRU500A. NewEgg has the media for $1.25 - $1.99 depending on the quantity you order.

Does anyone have any experience with using OPTODISC media with the DRU500A? Are there any other types of inexpensive media that have been found to be successful with it?

    Thanks,
