    Hiya...

Just nabbed the ATI 8500DV in hopes of ending my GeForce2 capture woes and it would seem I have stepped in yet another pile of shet. Woohooo!

My problem is that almost every time I run the capture component of MSP 6.5, the program tells me it is loading the capture driver and then I get a black screen followed by an unintended reboot, as though I hit the reset button on my box. I've used the same software to capture with my old card, so I'm quite sure Ulead is not to blame. Also, I've made sure I am running the latest ATI drivers and have double checked to make sure there are no leftover remnants of my old Geforce drivers lying around. (The old card was the Asus V7700, btw.)

The real kicker for me is that the software provided by ATI, though definitely not the ideal, works OK for capturing. I'd just prefer to stick by tried and true Ulead, since it is what I am comfortable working with. (ATI's MMC is what is provided and capture must be done by using the TV applet in that program.)

From what I've read in these forums, ATI is fairly well known for making pretty respectable hardware and pretty abysmal software. That being the case, I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, doing my best to clear the registry of any old stuff and, of course, re-installing Ulead. I've seen a few posts that are semi-pertinent to this topic, including a few from people that tried everything up to and including a clean install without much success. Having tried everything but the system wipe, I'm pretty much at wits end with this thing. Jlundin said in his post that he has enough love-hate relationships in his life and I'm with him. If I'm going to blow a lot of money to get screwed, I should have more to show for it than a $170 coaster for my drinks, right? If anyone has any bright ideas, I'd love to hear em. Thanks all...

P.S. If anyone could suggest a good software to encode uncompressed avi (1 gig/minute!!) way down, I'd appreciate it. I'm totally new to that game.

Just tried it again after switching to Ulead 5.0 and results are the same.

Sorry, but does ANYONE answer these posts anymore? If you have some knowledge about this, your two cents would be very much appreciated. Ty...
