  1. Are SVCDs fixed at 480x480 no matter what you do? I am trying to rip a DVD, which went well, but when I get to re-encode for SVCD, it seems the output is a fixed 480x480 and the video looks very blocky. I suppose I screwed up, but what should I be doing?

The raw VOB files (using dvd2avi) report the movie to be 720x40 which is acceptable to me, and is 16:9.

SVCD resolution is not fixed at 480x480. You might see better results at 352x480 or 352x240. Your problem is low bitrate and reducing resolution can help that problem. there's an unlock option in the template directory.
That will make all the options in the template user selectable.

  3. Actually, when I said the video looked blocky, i didn't mean that there were a lot of artifacts in the window, I meant that everything looked squished to accomidate the 480x480 resolution. Would I be able to encode the SVCD as 720x480?

  4. SVCD is 480x480 for NTSC and 480x576 for PAL.

That squished look will go away when it is played on a standalone unit that supports SVCD. That is how it looks on the computer, don't worry about that.

352x480 is not a standard SVCD res, that is 1/2 D1 and also the res for CVD.

however, lower resolution will have a less sharp image. you will have more fuzziness in an effort to reduce blockiness....
